    Meanwhile, those that still relied on on-premises infrastructure<\/span> or who were in the middle of migrating were forced to scramble. Suddenly setting up remote access for hundreds or even thousands of employees<\/span> is no easy task. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Without the scalability<\/span> of the cloud<\/span><\/strong>, some organizations<\/span> do not have the bandwidth<\/span> needed to accommodate so many connections. This does not mean that cloud infrastructure<\/span> is not having its limits tested, however. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Fortunately, Kubernetes<\/span> entered the picture<\/strong>, filling the gaps and extending cloud<\/span> and on-premise capabilities<\/span>. Kubernetes<\/span> enables organizations<\/span> to improve their scalability<\/span> and modularity<\/span>, as well as provides the controls needed to reproduce environments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    In addition to working from home, COVID-19<\/span> has confined nearly all activities. As a result, the number of people turning to Internet-based<\/span> services for news, entertainment, socialization, and sanity has spiked like never before. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The demand for cloud-based services has risen<\/strong> so much that many providers have had to place caps on their services. For example, Netflix<\/a> and Amazon Prime<\/span> both placed quality limits on their streaming<\/span> services to help ensure that all users<\/span> could be served.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Luckily, the larger network providers already had redundancies and options for scalability<\/span> in place. What was planned for short term increases, for example during Black Friday or Cyber Monday sales, has been leveraged to support increased traffic for months.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    In particular, development and operations teams<\/span> have been tested during the current pandemic. These teams<\/span> are responsible for developing and maintaining the software and infrastructure<\/span> that cloud-based services rely on. For these teams<\/span>, the efficiency of their existing systems and pipelines has played a significant role in how well services have been able to support increasing demand. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

    If teams<\/span> were already operating smoothly with a DevOps<\/span> strategy<\/strong>, scaling<\/span> to meet rising needs is fairly straightforward. The automation and agile practices<\/strong> that DevOps<\/span> teams use ease adaptation. Additionally, those teams<\/span> using microservices<\/span>, were able to begin scaling<\/span> up right away. Microservices<\/span> do not need to be redesigned to work at scale<\/span> and are dependent only on the limitations of network infrastructure<\/span>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Due to these advantages, the success of many cloud-based services has been in large part due to their DevOps teams<\/a> and tooling. In particular, microservices<\/a> and container<\/span> tooling such as Kubernetes<\/span>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

    What is Kubernetes?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    Kubernetes<\/span><\/strong> is an open-source<\/span> container<\/span> orchestration<\/strong> that teams<\/span> use to automate and manage microservice deployments<\/strong>. It enables you to leverage a highly resilient, self-healing, distributed infrastructure<\/span> that can be updated with zero downtime and scaled as needed. You can run Kubernetes<\/a> in nearly any environment, including on-premises, in the cloud<\/span>, or in hybrid architectures<\/span>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    While some organizations<\/span> operate Kubernetes<\/span> on their own, you can also leverage Kubernetes as a <\/a>S<\/a>ervice<\/a> (KaaS) solutions.     For those organizations<\/span> already using Kubernetes<\/span>, the decision to implement the platform is one they may be patting themselves on the back for. For other organizations<\/span>, the current pandemic may be an eye-opener. These organizations<\/span> may now be looking for a better solution to operations in the future.     You can use Kubernetes<\/span> for a range of flexible deployments, including across infrastructure<\/span> types. For example, you can easily use the platform to perform canary, blue-green, or A\/B deployments.     Kubernetes<\/span> uses infrastructure as code<\/span> (IaC<\/a>), enabling you to define your deployments as text. This enables you to easily duplicate, modify, or reinitialize environments with minimal effort and simplified versioning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Built-in monitoring and centralized configuration information provide visibility over complex deployments. You can use the Kubernetes dashboard to visualize the status of your containers and clusters and quickly identify bottlenecks or issues.     In 2020, almost anyone who is scaling<\/span> up is doing it with Kubernetes<\/span><\/strong>.
