Part of this involves staying engaged with the speaker throughout the message they are trying to convey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To do this properly, one needs to be self-aware. You must consciously be thinking \u201cI\u2019m listening to so and so. I want to make sure I understand them clearly.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can help yourself to be an active <span id=\"urn:enhancement-a3d3a077\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/listening\">listener<\/span> by doing the following:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Maintain open-posture, face the speaker, and maintain eye-contact when possible<\/strong>. This type of non-verbal communication will indicate to the other person that you are paying attention to the message. This will also help you to avoid distractions from the environment.<\/li><li><strong>Show that you&#8217;re listening<\/strong>. Nod occasionally. Smile or use other appropriate facial expressions. Encourage the speaker to continue with short statements of affirmation like \u201cuh-huh\u201d or \u201cyes\u201d.<\/li><li><strong>Be neutral and non-judgementa<\/strong>l. Don\u2019t mentally start to prepare a rebuttal to the message or interrupt with a counter-argument.<\/li><li><strong>Be patient<\/strong>. Allow for periods of silence. Let the speaker finish each point before asking a question.<\/li><li><strong>Ask additional questions.<\/strong> Help yourself to understand. Be open and honest but assert your opinions respectfully. Speak to the other person the way you would like to be spoken to. When possible, ask open-ended questions to gain more clarity on what someone is conveying.<\/li><li><strong>Reflect back on what is said.<\/strong> Summarise the message in your own words.
