We interviewed him to learn more about his journey as an <span id=\"urn:enhancement-a04b04e5\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/entrepreneurship\">entrepreneur<\/span> with digital <span id=\"urn:enhancement-c689d848\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/company\">companies<\/span>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-an-accident-entrepreneur\">An accident entrepreneur<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Scott, you define yourself &#8220;an accidental <span id=\"urn:enhancement-176bd88c\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/entrepreneurship\">entrepreneur<\/span>&#8220;. What do you mean?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I didn&#8217;t get into <span id=\"urn:enhancement-cdf17861\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-creative-work\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/github\">GitHub<\/span> because I was really interested in creating some large <span id=\"urn:enhancement-4c54c7eb\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/company\">company<\/span>. I don&#8217;t think any of us were really interested in that. <strong>We wanted to create something that we wanted to see exists in the world<\/strong>\u2014that if existed, we would have just paid for it, and would have been great. But it didn&#8217;t exist. And the solutions out there were frustrating.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And so we started building it for the love of building it, for creating something that we wanted to use, and we wanted to see. Chatterbug, the <span id=\"urn:enhancement-1b726a1b\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/company\">company<\/span> that I&#8217;m running now, is the same thing. I would have preferred to have just paid for something that that helped me to learn a language in a very real way. And instead I found myself having to put everything together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So the <span id=\"urn:enhancement-361ce39c\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/company\">companies<\/span> that I&#8217;m interested in, from an investment or a <span id=\"urn:enhancement-de3920b8\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/mentorship\">mentoring<\/span> standpoint are the ones where <strong>people are building things that they love<\/strong>. They are building things that they want to see in the world and not doing it to be an <span id=\"urn:enhancement-f43b2835\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/entrepreneurship\">entrepreneur<\/span>, but to <strong>do it to be a creator<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>What are the most common errors the young <span id=\"urn:enhancement-622f1887\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/entrepreneurship\">entrepreneur<\/span> do, especially in small <span id=\"urn:enhancement-a2c4bf57\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/project\">projects<\/span> while in the building stage?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It depends on the origin of the <span id=\"urn:enhancement-f3ff3f0d\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/company\">company<\/span>\u2013what people are trying to build. I think a lot of times, people ignore <a href=\"https:\/\/www.codemotion.com\/magazine\/articles\/developer-business\/developers-customer-service\/\" class=\"ek-link\">customer service<\/a> in a large way because they think that they&#8217;re not big enough for it. Whereas, I feel like it&#8217;s much more important for people to really <strong>focus on <span id=\"urn:enhancement-1fe5b5b7\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/customer_service\">customer service<\/span><\/strong> and make sure that you <strong>focus on a very specific segment of the <span id=\"urn:enhancement-e7bb9fe\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/community\">community<\/span><\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is also important to have <strong>superfans<\/strong>, people that love your <span id=\"urn:enhancement-8d446cd8\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/product_business\">product<\/span>, that would never use anything else, because they just think you&#8217;re doing such a great <span id=\"urn:enhancement-15bd5d96\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/employment\">job<\/span>. And <span id=\"urn:enhancement-5a0f3a6c\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/customer_service\">customer service<\/span> is a great way of doing that. I think a lot of people kind of put that off until later, until they&#8217;re bigger, and ignore their actual customers&#8217; needs to focus on things that aren&#8217;t as important to the overall <span id=\"urn:enhancement-8278101e\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/economic_growth\">growth<\/span> of the <span id=\"urn:enhancement-7bbc47fb\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/company\">company<\/span>. It&#8217;s like ironically trying to make the <span id=\"urn:enhancement-bfefcba8\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/company\">company<\/span> big right as opposed to trying to make the <span id=\"urn:enhancement-35b144a5\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/product_business\">product<\/span> really great.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-which-skill-are-good-for-entrepeneurs\">Which skill are good for entrepeneurs<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>What about the <span id=\"urn:enhancement-3f5d4b5c\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/company\">company<\/span> culture in <span id=\"urn:enhancement-1ef1e1ae\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-creative-work\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/github\">GitHub<\/span> and Chatterbug?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There&#8217;s tons of things that that we learned at <span id=\"urn:enhancement-aee2ddd4\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-creative-work\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/github\">GitHub<\/span>. Some of them are a bit complicated\u2014where we had a very flat organization in <span id=\"urn:enhancement-3deddc52\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-creative-work\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/github\">GitHub<\/span>. We had an <span id=\"urn:enhancement-6d564cc3\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/organization\">organization<\/span> that had about half of our <span id=\"urn:enhancement-7e13df47\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/employment\">employees<\/span> remote and the other half centralized in one building in San Francisco. And so I think stepping back from that after I left and looking at the <span id=\"urn:enhancement-9f17de08\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/economic_growth\">growth<\/span> problems of some of these, we have a very specific <strong>direct <span id=\"urn:enhancement-47c4af49\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"\">reporting<\/span> mechanism<\/strong> now, which is not overly burdensome but has people understand what is expected of them and what their future <a href=\"https:\/\/www.codemotion.com\/magazine\/dev-hub\/cto\/developer-careers-path\/\" class=\"ek-link\">career path<\/a> is. These are things that we kind of ignored in growing <span id=\"urn:enhancement-8503c051\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-creative-work\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/github\">GitHub<\/span> in this very organic way. For <a href=\"https:\/\/www.codemotion.com\/magazine\/video\/making-remote-work-work\/\" class=\"ek-link\">remote work<\/a>, we also want to set up the <span id=\"urn:enhancement-963c35c9\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/company\">company<\/span> so that it can function as a remote working environment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But there are downsides to that, such as having people feeling isolated, specifically considering the bifurcated nature of the <span id=\"urn:enhancement-fac95599\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/company\">company<\/span>\u2014where half remote and half not is really problematic. At the new <span id=\"urn:enhancement-e91c8fda\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/company\">company<\/span> we&#8217;re trying something which is more <strong>hub-based<\/strong>, where people can even work from home, with the sort of freedom and flexibility that you get with remote work. But we&#8217;re trying to get people to be close enough to each other. Then, within a day&#8217;s notice, they can get together and have a meeting in person if that&#8217;s something that the <span id=\"urn:enhancement-ed566e74\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/social_group\">group<\/span> feels that they need to do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I think there were great parts of this remote culture, that we wanted to maintain while mitigating the downsides of it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>What kind of <span id=\"urn:enhancement-a66368af\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/skill\">skills<\/span> or competencies are you looking for?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There&#8217;s a big difference in the type of <span id=\"urn:enhancement-e43d73b4\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/company\">company<\/span> that <span id=\"urn:enhancement-3d02e090\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-creative-work\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/github\">GitHub<\/span> and Chatterbug were. <span id=\"urn:enhancement-3c57abbc\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-creative-work\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/github\">GitHub<\/span> was a very <span id=\"urn:enhancement-fc44ed39\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/software_developer\">developer<\/span>-focused <span id=\"urn:enhancement-2f5f30a9\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/company\">company<\/span> that hired <span id=\"urn:enhancement-fe3408d5\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/software_developer\">developers<\/span> to work on something. For <span id=\"urn:enhancement-9a7ba2a7\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/software_developer\">developers<\/span> at Chatterbug, we&#8217;re building something for language learners, which is anybody. And so it&#8217;s important to us, <span id=\"urn:enhancement-fd1df85b\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/company\">company<\/span>-wide, to have a very wide sort of background of <strong><span id=\"urn:enhancement-68180786\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/diversity\">diversity<\/span> of people<\/strong>, including different cultures and different language grounds. But we&#8217;ve also found that we can hire relatively <a href=\"https:\/\/www.codemotion.com\/magazine\/articles\/stories\/tra-ojo-dedicated-to-junior-developers\/\" class=\"ek-link\">junior developers<\/a> and letting them build up their <span id=\"urn:enhancement-d6288075\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/skill\">skill<\/span> sett.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In general, I think it&#8217;s the <strong>attitude<\/strong> of wanting to help customers is more important than the technological <span id=\"urn:enhancement-f4797bd2\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/know-how\">know-how<\/span>. Because I feel like that&#8217;s trainable. You can help somebody get up to learn and speed up with a specific <span id=\"urn:enhancement-614bed4f\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/software_framework\">framework<\/span> a lot more easily than you can have them come to work with a positive attitude and really wanting to help people, really caring about how they can learn languages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We are also trying to make sure that everybody in the <span id=\"urn:enhancement-11892405\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/company\">company<\/span> is learning a language all the time. Whether they&#8217;re using our <span id=\"urn:enhancement-ae228b33\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/product_business\">product<\/span> or something external\u2014they can bring ideas into our <span id=\"urn:enhancement-a77a4add\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/product_business\">product<\/span>\u2014, we want to make sure that everybody at every point cares about learning languages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-tips-for-prospective-entrepreneurs\">Tips for prospective entrepreneurs<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Do you have some tips for prospective <span id=\"urn:enhancement-43d5488a\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/entrepreneurship\">entrepreneurs<\/span>?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That&#8217;s a great question. I think if you are technical and you want to start a <span id=\"urn:enhancement-be72a931\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/company\">company<\/span> you&#8217;re at a major advantage, because you can <strong>build a <span id=\"urn:enhancement-fdb3248d\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/prototype\">prototype<\/span><\/strong>. You can build something that you can use with a minimal staff.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I think if you&#8217;re coming from the other direction, it&#8217;s much more difficult to build something that you can test down, and so I think you have a huge advantage in learning business. You need to find people for a sort of seed investment or something like that, so that you can get people to help you in building a business that are outside a <span id=\"urn:enhancement-9a9711db\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/product_business\">product<\/span>.&nbsp;But if you can focus on <span id=\"urn:enhancement-8198098e\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/product_business\">product<\/span>, I think especially in this age and in doing startups you can get so far with so little, if you have technical <span id=\"urn:enhancement-59067409\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/experience\">experience<\/span>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The most important things to learn when you start a <span id=\"urn:enhancement-2dc503e6\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/company\">company<\/span> and you want to hire people is to figure out the <strong>basics of <span id=\"urn:enhancement-455d0de0\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/management\">management<\/span><\/strong>. This is something that we really ignored at <span id=\"urn:enhancement-8df4ffa0\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-creative-work\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/github\">GitHub<\/span> and it was very difficult for a long time because we started with this sort of ignorance of how to properly manage people, how to give people good feedback, how to involve them, and how to help them in their career paths. These are things that we didn&#8217;t really care about in the early days and it made things really difficult as we grew.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So read some <a href=\"https:\/\/www.codemotion.com\/magazine\/articles\/stories\/developer-leadership-books\/\" class=\"ek-link\">books<\/a> on management. You can just basically use of how-tos\u2014how to get feedback, how to do reporting structures. That really helped everybody involved in the process feel comfortable and feel like they know what&#8217;s expected from them and whether they&#8217;re doing well or not.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Don\u2019t be afraid to <strong>give good feedback<\/strong>. Don&#8217;t make everybody feel like they&#8217;re doing a great job all the time if they&#8217;re not right. Say this is what I expect, this is what&#8217;s not happening, here&#8217;s what I&#8217;d like to happen a month from now.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With these types of things, I feel like a lot of people can have <strong>autonomy<\/strong> and can go really hard in in a direction of building something amazing. But if they don&#8217;t know what&#8217;s expected from them then they don&#8217;t know which direction to go. I think that&#8217;s one of the things that technical co-founders have a hard time with.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It&#8217;s also important being able to say &#8220;no&#8221; to people or being able to give harsh, criticism if you need to. That&#8217;s really difficult to learn as a technical person.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The other thing that&#8217;s probably really valuable for entrepreneurs with technical background is to hire. It&#8217;s important that you hire somebody that&#8217;s smarter than you or can be better than you at something. A lot of times, when tech people start companies they should start out as generalists. Then they should hire specialists to take over one part of their job sort of constantly, so that at some point you&#8217;re surrounded by people that are better at everything than you are at any specific thing.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And <strong>you really shouldn&#8217;t be doing a lot of coding<\/strong> or general work <a href=\"https:\/\/www.codemotion.com\/magazine\/dev-hub\/cto\/quit-coding\/\" class=\"ek-link\">anymore<\/a>. As I said before, there were downsides to it, but we learned how to do that better overtime right. So a lot of it was <strong>trial and error<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The other thing was to just find people in the circles that you need to know and get advice from them. There&#8217;s a lot of people that are very successful, with a ton of experience that might be interested in your project and are more than happy to sit down with you and give you advice if you ask.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I think that&#8217;s something that not a lot of people take enough advantage of.
