I tried summarizing those below.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-2474 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.codemotion.com\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/1_tTI4LOqV3PIy7rlSNBnksg.jpeg\" alt=\"\"><br \/>\n<em>Day 0\u200a\u2014\u200athe mood<\/em><\/p>\n<h2>Coolblue: From 100 to 1000+ deployments a day<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/phermens\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Pat Hermens<\/a> is the Development Manager at Coolblue. Coolblue is a Dutch company, with a large internal development department. Coolblue is seeing some 1000+ deployments a day, and Pat guided the audience through what enables them to move so quickly, the tools they use, and most importantly, the mindset required to enable development teams to deliver at rapid pace.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-2474 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.codemotion.com\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/1_PSWaSPq0Z8K1uJPrBTlIfQ.jpeg\" alt=\"\"><br \/>\n<em>Pat Hermens, Development Manager at Coolblue<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Why 1000+ deployments a day even? With 1.13b revenue in 2018 (and 14% growth year over year), and development teams doubling with each year (they\u2019re at 18 teams now) the question of \u201cwill it scale\u201d is beyond legit.<\/p>\n<p><q>Apparently we are too much trained to disregard differences in scale, to treat them as \u201cgradual differences that are not essential.\u201d We tell ourselves that what we can do once, we can also do twice and by induction, we fool ourselves into believing that we can do it as many times as needed, but this is just not true.<\/q><\/p>\n<p>In a talk titled \u201cFaster to master\u201d from a few years back, was an exploration of DevOps practices being put in place at Coolblue. Pat collected the buillding blocks for a good DevOps practice in a \u201cFaster to master\u201d checklist:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-2474 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.codemotion.com\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/1_XjagRTVWq_baLIVNQrXYKQ-1.png\" alt=\"\"><br \/>\n<em>\u201cFaster to master\u201d checklist<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Over time Coolblue ticked off ever more checkboxes, and defined the 4 prerequisites for their dev teams to do their best work:<\/p>\n<p>+ Responsibility<br \/>\n+ Autonomy<br \/>\n+ Ownership<br \/>\n+ Failure (addressing it as it is, a learning opportunity)<\/p>\n<h2>Responsibility<\/h2>\n<p>The Hosting &amp; Deploment (DevOps) team used to be the core blocker for delivery. As the number of software teams grew exponentially, so did the informal networks between <span id=\"urn:batch-analysis-a1f5f396-d781-4f4c-9423-f0af2b023aa1\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-no-link wl-other\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/team\">teams<\/span>, exchanging <span id=\"urn:batch-analysis-7de21700-ecf2-44d5-a9cc-48f081035260\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-no-link wl-other\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/strategy\">strategies<\/span> on how to circumvent DevOps.<\/p>\n<p>By enabling the <span id=\"urn:batch-analysis-4b34f6bb-3476-4f97-87f8-43489e97f513\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-no-link wl-other\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/team\">teams<\/span> to take responsibility for Ops themselves\u200a\u2014\u200aand by using linters, and an automated CI\/CD process\u200a\u2014\u200aHosting &amp; Deployment are now a <span id=\"urn:batch-analysis-0f56c8fa-15fa-488f-bd4f-09bb4991fc2e\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-no-link wl-other\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/team\">team<\/span> just like any other, and no longer bottleneck.<\/p>\n<h2>Autonomy<\/h2>\n<p>Coolblue has a lot of services, all called Vanessa (something). While services that have been broken apart from the delphi monolith aptly named Vanessa Optima Prime are more fit to use applications like Splunk, Datadog and thus logging, and alerts, Prime took the <span id=\"urn:batch-analysis-fb12f987-1579-4dcf-b619-76342441eb35\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-no-link wl-other\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/ember_company\">company<\/span> to where they are today.<\/p>\n<p>One team got the honour and the priviledge to make Prime integrate with modern tooling. While they certainly weren\u2019t succesful at the first try, they had the unequivocal freedom to try solutions as they saw fit.<\/p>\n<h2>Ownership<\/h2>\n<p>At Coolblue they take ownership very seriously. Like a contract, it is well documented who owns what, and the <span id=\"urn:batch-analysis-77980a1a-6b54-40cd-a1e7-0bdef3bfdf9d\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-no-link wl-other\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/team\">team<\/span> that owns a topic is free in the tools they want to use. Pat confesses he doesn\u2019t know whether or not Coolblue \u201cdoes\u201d Kubernetes, or Serverless, because it doesn\u2019t matter.<\/p>\n<h2>Failure<\/h2>\n<p>Coolblue is serious about error reporting. When a campaign (buy a coffee machine, get a milk frother for free) f-ed up the provisioned space planning for their bike couriers, Coolblue knew about it in the instance it happened.<\/p>\n<p><q>Fail early, fail often, but always fail forward.<\/q><\/p>\n<p>In a RFO (Reason for Outage), the people responsible are to explain why instances are terminated. In RFO meetings that take place once a month the <span id=\"urn:batch-analysis-761308c5-5e01-4fe9-82d8-e74a15439a7b\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-no-link wl-other\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/team\">teams<\/span> discuss how to mitigate issues moving forward.<\/p>\n<p>And because we all like a good checklist, Pat shared the one for the \u201c100 to 1.000\u201d journey:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-2474 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.codemotion.com\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/1_75R0XFMazQZPjxkrngDXTw.png\" alt=\"\"><br \/>\n<em>The \u201c100 to 1.000\u201d checklist<\/em><\/p>\n<h2>Diversity in tech panel: understanding what WE can do every day<\/h2>\n<p>Diversity in tech: what\u2019s actually being done to make the <span id=\"urn:batch-analysis-67488194-09b0-42ef-b3e3-5369507044f9\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-no-link wl-other\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/community\">community<\/span> more inclusive? We all agree that <span id=\"urn:batch-analysis-ee74ff25-6edf-4487-8f26-f638dea967a9\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-no-link wl-other\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/inclusion_education\">education<\/span>, careers, and opportunities in technology should not be limited to any one demographic or sector. At the same time, there are underrepresented groups who are struggling to break into the field.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-2474 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.codemotion.com\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/1_vOBAzahAl7A-3SmzKN6ziw-1.jpeg\" alt=\"\"><\/p>\n<p>MC-ing the panel is <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/elizacamber\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Eliza Camber<\/a>, Android Developer at Pixplixity, and GDE (<span id=\"urn:batch-analysis-5a3cbb71-b77b-4038-a929-b2b05e6a5070\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-no-link wl-other\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/google_developer_expert\">Google Developer Expert<\/span>). She\u2019s an organizer for the GDG (Google Developer Group) NL and the lead for the WomenTechmakers program in NL. Joining Eliza, <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/qaidj\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Qa\u2019id Jacobs<\/a> is a UX Strategist at Constellation Design. Born and raised in New York and New Jersey (USA), Qa\u2019id moved to Amsterdam in 2013. He has worked with both large, global corporates and small, bootstrapped startups. Using an empathetic design approach, he takes on challenges of class, locale, and context. <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/chimney42\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Lian Li<\/a> is a <span id=\"urn:batch-analysis-23ccde72-d3e2-4aa1-ae35-1d2760f3c4a5\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-no-link wl-other\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/software_engineer\">Software Engineer<\/span> at Container Solutions. She recently co-organized Serverless Days Amsterdam. And <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/jean-agnes-pongasi-volski-9453878\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Jean Volski<\/a> is the Global Support Product Lead Developer Tools at Atlassian, with over 15 years experience managing support and services teams across diverse cultures and technical expertise.<\/p>\n<p>Eliza asked if harmful product decisions could be omitted by creating diverse <span id=\"urn:batch-analysis-fd1fd90d-3d37-4ce1-a59a-ede4d590959e\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-no-link wl-other\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/team\">teams<\/span>. To which Qa\u2019id said that you never know what a product will do \u201cuntil the thing is out there\u201d and that making assumptions is hard.<br \/>\nJean: \u201cWhen you bring people from different walks of life together, the conflict it naturally brings is very healthy. It forces everyone to challenge ideas and assumptions, which pushes the collective forward. But it\u2019s not a silver bullet, if a leader doesn\u2019t know how to manage a multicultural <span id=\"urn:batch-analysis-b5aee34a-74e4-4bbe-b258-ed3e419f5d8e\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-no-link wl-other\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/team\">team<\/span>, that could actually harm productivity.\u201d You can\u2019t just put diverse people in a room and expect it to benefit the bottom line.<\/p>\n<p>Lian started her career in gaming, which made for a rocky start especially. \u201cAt first I tried to be one of the boys, I\u2019d overcompensate in the sexist jokes and devaluing other women.\u201d After therapy, she realized that she hated everything about being a woman in this society. \u201cWhite men get to represent everyone, but as a woman or person of color you represent whatever box you\u2019re put in, and your actions are put under a magnifying glass.\u201d<br \/>\nQa\u2019id: \u201cWe need more and more diverse role models, so that we can mix and match and take away what inspire us.<\/p>\n<p>Lian on how we need to start (with the) young: \u201cChildren are so impressionable, and we can\u2019t expect venture capitalists to do right by our kids. Instead we need to educate the parents so they can support their children\u2019s curiosity.\u201d Qa\u2019id: \u201cAll of our actions teach our kids about gender, race, and class. We need to be very conscious about what those lessons are going to be.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Qa\u2019id on promoting women: \u201cI like to use the metaphor of someone going to the hospital and their leg is broken. The medical staff will care for their leg and no-one will ask them why they\u2019re being so leg-centric. That\u2019s where the problem is, and that\u2019s what needs to be cured.\u201d I loved how Lian brought up that with the prominence AI is gaining we need to have the conversation about diversity and inclusion now.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-2474 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.codemotion.com\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/1_z5AzYKZa2auYXy_so08t_g.jpeg\" alt=\"\"><br \/>\n<em>Obviously I didn\u2019t make it to Douglas Crockford\u2019s keynote\u2026<\/em><\/p>\n<h2>Breaking into DevRel<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/thiagoavadore\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Thiago de Faria<\/a> from LINKIT led a panel on Developer Relations with <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/degoodmanwilson\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Don Goodman-Wilson<\/a> from <span id=\"urn:batch-analysis-3e55c3cb-fbc6-4ffb-b948-298c96794c28\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-no-link wl-creative work\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/github\">GitHub<\/span>, <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/rainleander\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">K Rain Leander<\/a> from Red Hat, <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/gitbisect\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Jason Yee<\/a> from Datadog and yours truly (from Microsoft).<\/p>\n<p>Where our roles differ on certain aspects\u200a\u2014\u200alike what department we report to, if at all\u200a\u2014\u200awe share many definitions and values. Like how we are an advocate for our product\u2019s and solutions\u2019 users, more so than for our employers. And how integrity and authenticity are paramount. Neither of us would push an unethical product, because no compensation is worth sacrifing our careers over.<\/p>\n<p>To effectively communicate with your <span id=\"urn:batch-analysis-8d16268e-f5a6-400a-a3f0-78cb3ca15e6a\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-no-link wl-other\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/ember_company\">company<\/span> (or a prospective employer) about what the Developer Relations role entails, we unanimously recommended Mary Thengvall\u2019s \u2018The Business Value of Developer Relations: How and Why Technical Communities Are Key To Your Success\u2019.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-2474 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.codemotion.com\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/1_ds4quqEiK6VPSN1tihj2Ew.jpeg\" alt=\"\"><br \/>\n<em>From left to right: Thiago, Rain, Don, Jason and me<\/em><\/p>\n<h2>Chinese food, motor scooters, and open source development<\/h2>\n<p>Don Goodman-Wilson is Developer Advocate at GitHub, and a philosopher-engineer who has previously worked with\/in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.codemotion.com\/magazine\/dev-hub\/security-manager\/web-app-security-tools\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">web security<\/a>, chatbots, streaming media, embedded hardware, the model railroading industry, and academic philosophy.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-2474 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.codemotion.com\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/1_DxjWilfFTbM_SVmCnevu4A.jpeg\" alt=\"\"><br \/>\n<em>There are *some* problematic figures within OSS<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Don says OSS is sick, and compromised NPM packages are just a symptom. We strongly identify <span id=\"urn:batch-analysis-19cf78c4-ab38-4bc9-ae7f-a57b0579571d\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-no-link wl-other\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/project\">projects<\/span> with their maintainers, which is problematic when more often than not these people\u200a\u2014\u200aoverwhelmingly white hetero cis men\u200a\u2014\u200aare problematic. Case in point: Linus Torvalds. Don suggests we move away from the tight coupling of <span id=\"urn:batch-analysis-d379bddf-fe1e-4f4a-a53f-a3e8219894b1\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-no-link wl-other\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/project\">projects<\/span> and their maintainers, adopt the Chinese restaurants\u2019 model and share excess demand. Say what?<\/p>\n<p>Forking is considered a bad thing for power conflicts reasons. But that\u2019s really mainly a culture thing. The opportunity to make copies freely and do with those whatever we please doesn\u2019t play well with our instinct to keep the keys to success to ourselves.<\/p>\n<p><strong>There\u2019s roughly 4 ways the fork goes:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>1. The death of the fork<br \/>\n2. Fork merges with the original (egcs)<br \/>\n3. The death of the original (x.org)<br \/>\n4. Two competing projects (libc\/glibc)<\/p>\n<p>Chinese food exploded across America in the early 20th century, rapidly adapting to local tastes while also spreading like wildfire. How was it able to spread so fast? A distributed open source-like development model, that\u2019s how.<\/p>\n<p>Whenever in the US you go to a Chinese restaurant, you\u2019ll get the same exact <span id=\"urn:batch-analysis-07aefc65-eb35-47cf-8f8c-604764aad06f\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-no-link wl-other\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/experience\">experience<\/span>. The north star of Mc Donalds (13.677 locations in the US), is what 41.000 Chinese restaurants achieve with no central coordination. It\u2019s the most successful restaurant model in the world.<\/p>\n<p>When Nixon went to China in 1965 and ate Chinese food on television, that sparked a huge interest, causing these entrepreneurs to look to alter dishes to appeal to this curious audience, and use locally available ingredients.<\/p>\n<p>In our culture we have the urge to attribute success to one originator. Instead migration associations in the US that help Chinese immigrants land a <span id=\"urn:batch-analysis-885a2a62-e352-43a7-b6eb-e8c4eb32a699\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-no-link wl-other\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/job\">job<\/span>, know where there is demand for a new Chinese restaurants, or chefs. Via these networks restaurant owners share dishes that work with their audience, reducing risk because it\u2019s in their benefit when Americans have a favorable attitude towards foreign food. A powerful <span id=\"urn:batch-analysis-857ad286-679f-41f6-8784-791583dd5772\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-no-link wl-other\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/open_source\">open source<\/span> at work.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The benefits of decentralization:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>1.Removal of ego<br \/>\n2. Democratized access to contribution<br \/>\n3. Increased diversity of experience and opinion<br \/>\n4. Better localized product-market fit<\/p>\n<p><strong>Copies are cheap<\/strong>, says Don. We know this from <span id=\"urn:batch-analysis-7cfa6adb-05fe-4187-bf14-44e2149724c8\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-no-link wl-other\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/open-source_software\">open source software<\/span>. <strong>Share excess demand<\/strong>, and <strong>decentralize production<\/strong>, to reduce risk and benefit as a <span id=\"urn:batch-analysis-2bed87ea-6c3c-4753-a559-ed8dfbb02c95\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-no-link wl-other\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/community\">community<\/span>.<\/p>\n<h2>Ethical questions in software engineering<\/h2>\n<p>\u201cSoftware is eating the world. We, developers and architects, are a major force influencing software, technology, and the world it creates. We don\u2019t have the privilege of being unaware of our actions.\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/margolis20\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Rotem Hermon<\/a> is a Lead Architect for Customer Data Cloud at SAP, and asks us whether we\u2019re ok with relying on privately developed and owned software systems deciding who gets a loan, or who\u2019s killed in favour of sparing another person\u2019s life in case an autonomous car needs to make a split-second decision.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTechnology is not a get out of jail card.\u201d <span id=\"urn:batch-analysis-702fecda-4739-49ef-a96d-722d7bb1f4d1\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-no-link wl-other\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/facebook\">Facebook<\/span> , Uber and Airbnb can label themselves as technology companies but that doesn\u2019t exempt them from taking responsibility for the <span id=\"urn:batch-analysis-e0b6deaf-7187-4cca-bd93-b503c84c2b49\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-no-link wl-other\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/industry\">industries<\/span> they disrupt.<\/p>\n<p>Rotem encourages us to \u201ckeep asking questions\u201d and \u201cnot take things for granted\u201d. \u201cThere\u2019s a scarcity of IT talent, which means we can influence how our <span id=\"urn:batch-analysis-8cbae3c7-4368-46b1-9bd3-68403a504772\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-no-link wl-other\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/ember_company\">companies<\/span> move forward.\u201d One thing we should not be doing is simply using more <span id=\"urn:batch-analysis-9a058ca4-9305-4fb8-a014-1f281da84768\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-no-link wl-other\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/cogito_software\">software<\/span> to fix technology.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-2474 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.codemotion.com\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/1_mmh_WM0MIuVNmmAn7uvgZA.jpeg\" alt=\"\"><br \/>\n<em>That\u2019s us at the booth!<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>April 2nd and 3rd I spent (at the Microsoft booth) at Codemotion Amsterdam.
