{"id":1953,"date":"2019-12-04T16:53:30","date_gmt":"2019-12-04T15:53:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.codemotion.com\/magazine\/uncategorized\/recruiters-still-failing-on-gender-and-ethnicity-diversity\/"},"modified":"2021-12-23T11:57:42","modified_gmt":"2021-12-23T10:57:42","slug":"recruiters-still-failing-on-gender-and-ethnicity-diversity","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.codemotion.com\/magazine\/soft-skills\/diversity\/recruiters-still-failing-on-gender-and-ethnicity-diversity\/","title":{"rendered":"Recruiters still failing on gender and ethnicity diversity"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The majority of global businesses say they prioritise <strong>diversity<\/strong> &#8211; but they have far to go in terms of gender and ethnicity, according to new research findings.<\/p>\n<p>Data and analytics recruitment specialists Harnham have released three industry-related diversity reports, based on responses from the US, UK and Europe. <\/p>\n<p>The Harnam 2020 Global Diversity Reports specifically outlined gender and racial diversity in the global data and analytics industry. <\/p>\n<p>Previous <span id=\"urn:batch-analysis-45661b8b-6301-4ae6-be45-766d8b400e58\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-no-link wl-other\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/research\">research<\/span> from PriceWaterhouseCooper found that <strong>87% of global enterprises list diversity and inclusion as an organisational priority<\/strong>. However, Harnham&#x27;s findings show there is a long way to go in terms of seeing real and meaningful change.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;There is little argument now that businesses should be striving towards a diverse <span id=\"urn:batch-analysis-96908c6f-218c-44fa-b117-a88c649ee1fd\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-no-link wl-other\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/workplace\">workplace<\/span>,&quot; the report states. <\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&quot;<span id=\"urn:batch-analysis-34dcfc17-493b-4fa7-addc-e6d7f922ef28\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-no-link wl-other\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/research\">Research<\/span> has time and time again indicated that <strong>a diverse workforce drives profitability, increases staff satisfaction, and opens <span id=\"urn:batch-analysis-15ab534e-436d-4004-ae89-7f4d29e73877\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-no-link wl-other\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/ember_company\">companies<\/span> up to a broader range of solutions<\/strong>. Despite this, many businesses are still failing to capitalize on the advantages offered.&quot;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>&quot;This may be down to implementation rather than intent.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>This <span id=\"urn:batch-analysis-0579d891-5b78-4c75-96c0-70ef046f3996\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-no-link wl-other\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/failure\">failure<\/span> of <span id=\"urn:batch-analysis-84765490-2bc4-49bf-831a-54f3c5d71b18\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-no-link wl-other\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/ember_company\">companies<\/span> to reap the rewards of greater diversity doesn&#x27;t go unnoticed by their own employees &#8211; or those looking for <span id=\"urn:batch-analysis-8908ef59-f8ff-46d9-854b-8a5710034794\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-no-link wl-other\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/job\">jobs<\/span> in the <span id=\"urn:batch-analysis-aa4e4d9e-5aa3-4151-9097-725723c0226f\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-no-link wl-other\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/industry\">industry<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;<span id=\"urn:batch-analysis-ade53581-9445-4ba5-a180-e82c2ae474c0\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-no-link wl-other\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/research\">Research<\/span> from Glassdoor found that <strong>57% of employees believe that their <span id=\"urn:batch-analysis-233cc03e-52ef-49f9-94a9-72dce16c6f5b\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-no-link wl-other\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/ember_company\">companies<\/span> should be doing more to improve diversity<\/strong>, while two-thirds of job seekers consider it to be <strong>an important factor when evaluating a job offer<\/strong>,&quot; says the report.<\/p>\n<p>Among the main findings of the three report were some stark realisations. <\/p>\n<p>In the US, although there are more women achieving graduate degrees in STEM subjects than men, the effects of this development will take time to emerge.<\/p>\n<p>The report also had concerns over decreases in the numbers of women employees in certain areas of the <span id=\"urn:batch-analysis-0483020b-1add-4374-811d-ee468a5522e1\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-no-link wl-other\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/industry\">industry<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;In 2019, we found that 23% of data and analytics professionals were women, down from 31% the year before,&quot; says the report. <\/p>\n<p>&quot;In fact, all key areas saw a drop in the ratio of female to male professionals. Digital analytics still leads the way with 40% of roles filled by women, followed by marketing &amp; insight at 38%.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;However, data science and data and technology, the two areas that are the largest in the data and analytics industry, have a disproportionate effect on the overall gender split. At 84% and 83% male, respectively, if we\u2019re to see improvement across the <span id=\"urn:batch-analysis-af881441-ccac-447f-b022-a215116bd109\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-no-link wl-other\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/industry\">industry<\/span>, we\u2019ll need to see improvement here first.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>When it comes to the <strong>ethnicity divide<\/strong>, the report also found some troubling trends.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;Given that African American and Asian job applicants who mask their races on resumes are more likely to reach interview stage, work still needs to be done in this arena,&quot; says the report.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;African American and Hispanic or Latino professionals are under-represented in this particular <span id=\"urn:batch-analysis-05aee6aa-1192-49fe-b7b3-9ea3f35d7cf4\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-no-link wl-other\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/industry\">industry<\/span>. Those from a Hispanic background made up just 6% of respondents versus 18% nationally, while African Americans accounted for just 3% versus 12% nationally.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>Harnham&#x27;s head of learning and organisational development Barum Jeffries said: &quot;<strong>Society is changing<\/strong>.
