Couple this endeavour with both practical and societal barriers and one begins to appreciate the statistics behind the unemployment figures relating to persons of working age who have a disability.<\/p>\n<p>Often the problem is paradoxical in its nature; <span id=\"urn:enhancement-333ce228\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-other\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/employment\">employers<\/span> seek <span id=\"urn:enhancement-15429b75\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-other\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/experience\">experience<\/span> alongside <span id=\"urn:enhancement-2482707b\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-other\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/professional_certification\">qualifications<\/span>. Under usual circumstances an individual progressively builds their <span id=\"urn:enhancement-31e009ab\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-other\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/experience\">experience<\/span> portfolio, which serves as a catalyst to career progression.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"9t6v4\">Gain experience or go it alone?<\/h2>\n<p>How though to gain \u201c<span id=\"urn:enhancement-2467bbc2\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-other\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/experience\">experience<\/span>\u201d when the opportunity to achieve just that is denied to you simply as a result of you being disabled? For myself, I found that the only way I could achieve meaningful <span id=\"urn:enhancement-23b37b16\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-other\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/employment\">employment<\/span> opportunities was to create those chances myself; hence my having created now 19 individual <span id=\"urn:enhancement-ff16c65c\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-other\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/business\">businesses<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>Not everyone though has this ability, inclination nor desire. Frankly, looking back, I was forced into this position owing to the <span id=\"urn:enhancement-50eab4ab\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-other\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/social_inequality\">inequality<\/span> of the recruitment and hiring practices of every <span id=\"urn:enhancement-7a30423c\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-other\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/organization\">organisation<\/span> to which I approached.<\/p>\n<p>In 2016 I sold my last <span id=\"urn:enhancement-68379503\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-other\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/business\">business<\/span>. I desired a change in my working <span id=\"urn:enhancement-7bd701bf\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-other\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/lifestyle_sociology\">lifestyle<\/span> and wanted to be a part of something larger. I was seeking what I have termed \u201chome\u201d. Somewhere to grow, participate and contribute, to utilise my vast <span id=\"urn:enhancement-a1fba9bc\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-other\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/experience\">experience<\/span>, <span id=\"urn:enhancement-a2397049\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-other\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/knowledge\">knowledge<\/span> (and yes) <span id=\"urn:enhancement-4462b7c0\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-other\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/professional_certification\">qualifications<\/span>.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>More than 1,700 applications later and I\u2019ve almost nothing to show for it, I\u2019ve had less than five face-to-face interviews and the feedback from those leads one to an inescapable nagging conclusion.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>I do not make this statement lightly nor unconscious as to the ramifications of doing so. Nevertheless, I feel it necessary to make the case clearly. Despite many <span id=\"urn:enhancement-1f31917\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-other\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/organization\">organisations<\/span> claiming to be proactively seeking greater diversity within their <span id=\"urn:enhancement-be0f9b94\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-other\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/workforce\">workforce<\/span>, setting out inclusion and <span id=\"urn:enhancement-60958022\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-other\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/social_equality\">equality<\/span> statements, signing up to programs such as The <span id=\"urn:enhancement-6c9f1f07\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-other\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/disability\">Disability<\/span> Confident Scheme etc, the reality is that many <span id=\"urn:enhancement-3cb6b310\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-other\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/organization\">organisations<\/span> are prejudiced by the <span id=\"urn:enhancement-4b09893f\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-other\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/human\">human<\/span> aspect of the recruitment process.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"65llb\">If I&#8217;m &#8220;extremely inspirational&#8221;, why didn&#8217;t I get the job?<\/h2>\n<p>My latest feedback from a face-to-face interview with a leading FTSE100 <span id=\"urn:enhancement-6d70667f\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-other\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/company\">company<\/span>, a signatory to the DCS and one which sets out a full diversity, inclusion and <span id=\"urn:enhancement-7e6e2e12\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-other\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/social_equality\">equality<\/span> statement as to practices and policies, included referencing as to my being \u201cextremely inspirational\u201d just by way of example. Yet they were uncertain how I might lead a <span id=\"urn:enhancement-5a5cde01\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-other\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/team\">team<\/span> or achieve buy-in from the corporation at large. Let&#8217;s set aside the contradiction that an inspirational individual is by definition a person of influence; I\u2019m more concerned that it was felt appropriate to even reflect as to my being inspirational in the first place.<\/p>\n<p>I find myself struggling profusely with the obfuscation between organisations which claim to be proactively seeking a diverse <span id=\"urn:enhancement-3cce051c\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-other\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/workforce\">workforce<\/span>, with initiatives, policies and which have signed up to the Obligatory <span id=\"urn:enhancement-8c0f11a9\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-other\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/disability\">Disability<\/span> Confident Scheme (DCS), when in fact, beyond anything other than junior roles, they have no method of translating their stated vision to evoke change within their hiring managers and senior talent acquisition persons.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"dsuva\">Why you should&#8217;ve hired me<\/h2>\n<p>I\u2019ve long said, as a disabled person, one has to be naturally <span id=\"urn:enhancement-92260d48\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-other\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/entrepreneurship\">entrepreneurial<\/span> with regards to much of <span id=\"urn:enhancement-83645ca7\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-other\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/everyday_life\">daily life<\/span>, when you are forced to think abstractly on an ongoing basis, to be pragmatic and disruptive (transformative) in <span id=\"urn:enhancement-342cdc4e\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-other\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/everyday_life\">everyday life<\/span>. Imagine the impact such a person&#8217;s thought process might have upon <span id=\"urn:enhancement-b053247a\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-other\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/business\">business<\/span> activities and the resulting <span id=\"urn:enhancement-4e0883d6\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-other\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/employee_benefit\">benefits<\/span> to which an <span id=\"urn:enhancement-8104428c\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-other\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/organization\">organisation<\/span> stands to gain from.<\/p>\n<p>The sad truth is this, dear recruiter: when you\u2019re writing your rejection letter to a person with a disability, more often than not, your excuse for failing to hire is actually born from \u201cyour\u201d inability to see past your capacity to cope were you to be impacted by the disability presented to you.<\/p>\n<p>You forget that the individual in front of you, either on paper or literally, has likely lived with their disability for a period of time, is adjusted and comfortable in managing their status. It&#8217;s not about you and your preconceptions, fears or assumptions. In allowing this thought process to dominate the <span id=\"urn:enhancement-c87f3ff0\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-other\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/decision-making\">decision-making<\/span> function, the hiring process is hampered and an unbiased decision is impossible.<\/p>\n<p>The reality of your rejection of a disabled candidate&#8217;s application is far to often \u201cit&#8217;s not you, it&#8217;s me&#8221;, the choice has nothing to do with whether or not the candidate can perform the role, has the <span id=\"urn:enhancement-7f92bd2d\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-other\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/professional_certification\">qualification<\/span>, <span id=\"urn:enhancement-84edb08\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-other\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/experience\">experience<\/span> or <span id=\"urn:enhancement-1402fcf\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-other\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/knowledge\">knowledge<\/span>; it comes down to your prejudiced unspoken opinion as to how \u201cyou\u201d would cope which ultimately dooms the candidacy.<\/p>\n<p>This series of circumstances is multiplied the further one progresses up an <span id=\"urn:enhancement-df37a881\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-other\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/organization\">organisation<\/span>&#8216;s leadership hierarchy. If one is seeking a junior role, the \u201cleap\u201d in comprehension as to how the individual could \u201cmanage\u201d the role is seismically distorted over, for example, an application for a leadership role. Let\u2019s be honest with ourselves, recruiters simply struggle to understand how they perceive a disabled person&#8217;s ability to cope with life at the most basic level, let alone how they might function within a work environment. Now how might that disabled person provide leadership, fulfil the requirements of an <span id=\"urn:enhancement-d2ae1ebb\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-other\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/organization\">organisation<\/span> at a managerial level: \u201csurely it&#8217;s not possible, I couldn\u2019t do it\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>In terms of <span id=\"urn:enhancement-67ad071b\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-other\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/industry\">industries<\/span>, I\u2019ve had first-hand <span id=\"urn:enhancement-d7eec821\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-other\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/experience\">experience<\/span> as to how this scenario plays out based on various sectors. In short, the more the hiring function seems to find an industry fast-paced, with frequent change, disruption and transformation, the greater odds are of prejudiced <span id=\"urn:enhancement-dd3080ce\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-other\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/decision-making\">decision-making<\/span> processes. The irony of course being that this is precisely where the <span id=\"urn:enhancement-e388d028\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-other\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/survival_skills\">survival skills<\/span> of a disabled candidate provides for a uniquely balanced applicant over their able-bodied peers. This is certainly immensely true and recognisable in sectors such as technology and other \u201cassumed\u201d fast pace \u201cinnovation\u201d orientated <span id=\"urn:enhancement-82ceaa29\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-other\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/industry\">industries<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>The saddening and ironic fact is that persons with a disability are likely far more innovative, dynamic and adaptable than the average <span id=\"urn:enhancement-64f5bb49\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-other\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/employment\">employee<\/span>, skills such as resourcefulness, lateral thinking, resilience and proactiveness. <span id=\"urn:enhancement-8b22d463\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-other\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/employment\">Employers<\/span> truly are missing out on a <span id=\"urn:enhancement-97d0ba77\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-other\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/wealth\">wealth<\/span> of genuine talent and
