Dr Alfredo Morresi spoke at Codemotion Rome 2019 about the differences between management and leadership, the servant style of leadership and the challenges to the role of the team manager.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"asgi0\">Serve the team and let them grow<\/h2>\n<p>Management and leadership imply great responsibilities: managers have a strong influence on people\u2019s work and life. The output and commitment of team members is influenced by the style of <span id=\"urn:batch-analysis-7cd0330f-c73d-4473-93ab-5b89d55fae8c\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-no-link wl-other\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/management\">management<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>Dr Morresi asserts:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;A good manager should <strong>serve<\/strong> their people so they can get the <span id=\"urn:batch-analysis-228fe2d7-48d7-4b2d-bfb4-4cf95c224070\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-no-link wl-other\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/job\">job<\/span> done.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Dr Moresi defines leadership as &#8220;the responsibility to see others around us rise: a leader accounts for the professional (and human) growth of people in his\/her <span id=\"urn:batch-analysis-7875d137-2303-4c05-ac53-f59239bedfde\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-no-link wl-other\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/team\">team<\/span>. A good manager should let team members flourish according to their possibilities and aspirations.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>However, this does not mean anything goes. If a football team has no strikers there\u2019s no point in trying to turn a goalkeeper into a goal scorer, the skills and attitudes for those two kinds of \u201coperations\u201d are just different.<\/p>\n<p>Leadership is also different from <span id=\"urn:batch-analysis-2a5fef1e-9a18-4b4d-b3f2-714cf0c610bd\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-no-link wl-other\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/management\">management<\/span> due to different goals. Leadership is about <em>people growth. <\/em>Conversely, <span id=\"urn:batch-analysis-32f93a88-3a53-4948-8ebf-ec818037392f\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-no-link wl-other\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/management\">management<\/span> aims at <em>getting the <span id=\"urn:batch-analysis-09c46bce-4f79-4eac-ad2a-3c881503da73\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-no-link wl-other\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/job\">job<\/span> done<\/em>.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"64urc\">The virtues of servant leadership<\/h2>\n<p>The leadership style openly advocated by Dr Morresi is the \u201cservant leadership\u201d style, which may seem to be quite an oxymoron at first but actually mean to employ the following behavioural style to lead a <span id=\"urn:batch-analysis-83abe4a6-6499-49ec-bbbb-3c5208de66d1\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-no-link wl-other\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/team\">team<\/span>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Share responsibilities (remaining accountable)<\/li>\n<li>Share power as much as possible, thus to delegate and not to interfere.<\/li>\n<li>Put employees first.<\/li>\n<li>Help employees to develop both in the <span id=\"urn:batch-analysis-d68ad980-8a26-4d6b-9769-01c32babf4f2\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-no-link wl-other\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/ember_company\">company<\/span> and in their own life.<\/li>\n<li>Shield the <span id=\"urn:batch-analysis-74e43655-46ad-4c9b-abc1-50967de33ed5\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-no-link wl-other\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/team\">team<\/span> from external <span id=\"urn:batch-analysis-722c57a1-2b34-47de-aba7-0ca8ed16ec19\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-no-link wl-other\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/complexity\">complexity<\/span> and let people concentrate on their <span id=\"urn:batch-analysis-bfc710e4-ca98-48d9-a445-2b3d63d0300d\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-no-link wl-other\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/job\">job<\/span>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>A good serving manager should digest information and bring it to the <span id=\"urn:batch-analysis-cc1d3bb8-d543-40ee-b9ce-10ce8ce32246\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-no-link wl-other\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/team\">team<\/span>. They should deal with rather than simply transfer bureaucracy. A manager should also remain fully accountable for the <span id=\"urn:batch-analysis-7521f9a8-d091-4085-8172-1d9a9d3d44f9\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-no-link wl-other\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/team\">team<\/span>\u2019s output and progresses.I<\/p>\n<p>It is critical to create a psychologically safe environment where people may express themselves.&nbsp;The manager should (try to) be available. They should good with people, not impatient, not overly critical, etc.<\/p>\n<p>People make <span id=\"urn:batch-analysis-396e0f28-0587-4a3b-8d6c-2d2443e8fd39\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-no-link wl-other\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/team\">teams<\/span>. High performers set the team mood, make good suggestions and are important contributors. suggestions.<\/p>\n<p>People with <em>Untapped potential <\/em>need help to<em> <\/em>rediscover passions. Their situation may be caused by external reasons. They may suffer from a lack of <span id=\"urn:batch-analysis-91e99827-0f13-48d5-a0b2-7f7d69fb85c1\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-no-link wl-other\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/belief\">belief<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>People in the <em>sadness area<\/em> should definitely find a new place to stay, either inside or outside the <span id=\"urn:batch-analysis-ab47ffe5-9b6c-4e96-b38b-f859ca250f61\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-no-link wl-other\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/ember_company\">company<\/span>: they can poison the team mood.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"rpla\">Culture is nothing without vision<\/h2>\n<p>Culture is not enough. Vision is also needed. Dr Morresi defines vision as the \u201c<em>aspirational description of what the organisation wants to achieve in the mid-long term<\/em>\u201d. Vision defines the <em>reasons<\/em> why people come to work, their motivations, in short, it defines what the manager is and what he\/she is not.<\/p>\n<p>A good vision brings focus and energy. It points to where the manager wants to go and, as a leader, wants to bring the <span id=\"urn:batch-analysis-98103907-240a-44a7-bca4-bec3174c4833\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-no-link wl-other\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/team\">team<\/span>. A vision needs to be ambitious but reachable. It should be revised once in a while, and, if needed, adjusted.<\/p>\n<p>If vision states what one wants to achieve, it remains to define how to get there. Goals should be precise. Ambiguity is the enemy of efficiency. What does &#8220;done&#8217; mean and how do we know a goal is reached?<\/p>\n<p>What else for the achievement of results in a <span id=\"urn:batch-analysis-d0b99032-7a94-42f9-adc1-5b0fac90e2fa\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-no-link wl-other\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/project\">project<\/span>?
