Although he lives and works in <span id=\"urn:batch-analysis-29eae31d-f698-4103-98ac-b66d1ac3fdef\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-no-link wl-other\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/berlin\">Berlin<\/span>, we caught up with him as he returned to his birthplace of Scotland.<\/p>\n<p>It was as a teenager living here in the Scottish countryside that Paul started coding for the very first time \u2013 mainly out of frustration with the exceptionally slow dial-up internet that plagued rural Britain during the nineties.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><q><span id=\"urn:batch-analysis-88f766d7-19da-4161-bebc-386f875afe25\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-no-link wl-other\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/minification_programming\">Programming<\/span> done well is a team sport. I played rugby at school and, for me, <span id=\"urn:batch-analysis-23a84a85-7c3e-442d-94a6-8ef987166bd3\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-no-link wl-other\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/minification_programming\">programming<\/span> was no different from playing rugby \u2013 if you wanted to do well you had to work well with the <span id=\"urn:batch-analysis-46f48281-23c8-47d1-8a18-850a109cd940\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-no-link wl-other\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/team\">team<\/span><\/q><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI noticed there was a handful of websites that I was visiting which were particularly slow, even more than usual, and I found by digging through the <span id=\"urn:batch-analysis-f3535d01-73e6-4f2e-bdeb-5c90c8fbb636\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-no-link wl-other\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/source_code\">source code<\/span> of these websites that they were often being hosted by a particular technology. When I dug around some more, I discovered that these websites, or the technology that was hosting these websites, was something you could play with \u2013 you could see the code and you could edit that code and you could help make things better. So my first introduction to <span id=\"urn:batch-analysis-9b364b4b-8819-47a6-91d7-b4f4e6e92131\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-no-link wl-other\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/minification_programming\">programming<\/span> and to <span id=\"urn:batch-analysis-e0b36d2e-235d-4985-a2ac-bb0ddfc6b3cb\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-no-link wl-other\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/open_source\">Open Source<\/span> as a concept all happened at roughly the same time,\u201d says Paul.<\/p>\n<p>After studying as an undergraduate in pure software engineering, Paul went on to do a PhD in software engineering, specifically on the topic of productivity inside <span id=\"urn:batch-analysis-3c283424-d0b5-4865-85e4-46b347ad7681\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-no-link wl-other\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/open_source\">Open Source<\/span> projects. Which all sounds very clever and technical. But Paul says he was motivated mainly by curiosity \u2013 and the desire to break things.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019d always had an interest in learning how things work. Computer software was just a particular example of this. I was just as excited to know how cars work or how a <span id=\"urn:batch-analysis-c441b3d5-3740-4689-b73b-3315914b97b6\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-no-link wl-other\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/radio\">radio<\/span> works. <span id=\"urn:batch-analysis-0a28285c-36c0-48a8-a06a-923756fca7a7\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-no-link wl-other\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/cogito_software\">Software<\/span> was just another thing that I wanted to understand. Essentially I wanted to break things apart, find out how they worked, then put them back together again,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p><span id=\"urn:batch-analysis-8e4b634c-01b7-4c77-b5ee-6073bfbb9248\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-no-link wl-other\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/programmer\">Programmers<\/span> don\u2019t tend to have a reputation as gregarious team players amongst non-techies. But for Paul, the social aspect of <span id=\"urn:batch-analysis-d8f7e9ed-f7f9-408c-9206-12e1fdee9617\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-no-link wl-other\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/minification_programming\">programming<\/span> was what drove him \u2013 and what made him successful.<\/p>\n<p>His interests now lie off the rugby field, in art, photography and jazz. But Paul remains steadfast in his <span id=\"urn:batch-analysis-29f629e8-7d86-4e0e-b035-72ab390ab210\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-no-link wl-other\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/belief\">belief<\/span> in the importance of teamwork and social skills. He does, however, have a confession for us.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><q>Any <span id=\"urn:batch-analysis-f42e8119-2c1a-43ff-bd2d-15c4116747c4\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-no-link wl-other\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/programmer\">programmer<\/span> that\u2019s ever worked with me will testify that I am terrible! I\u2019m the world\u2019s worst <span id=\"urn:batch-analysis-7adc5ce2-9b5b-459d-9c29-ce24dc08949b\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-no-link wl-other\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/programmer\">programmer<\/span>. In terms of software engineering, that\u2019s not what I bring to the table. I can write not terrible code, but no one should pay me to write code!<\/q><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHistorically I worked on a <span id=\"urn:batch-analysis-196ab04a-89da-4ef1-932e-cba6cd25cd00\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-no-link wl-other\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/project\">project<\/span> called KDE for over 10 years but never wrote a single line of code for them. My role there was more community guidance and shepherding. My day job doesn\u2019t really involve <span id=\"urn:batch-analysis-e06643ed-c7d0-42f0-8a03-f0f839f78bcd\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-no-link wl-other\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/minification_programming\">programming<\/span>. I lead <span id=\"urn:batch-analysis-942e86f1-2245-4a71-a65d-a954486cb986\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-no-link wl-other\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/programmer\">programmers<\/span> but I don\u2019t get the opportunity to do it myself. I always say <span id=\"urn:batch-analysis-dc8346cb-65c0-49b3-b0ac-ccfb24583bb3\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-no-link wl-other\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/programmer\">programmers<\/span> don\u2019t get paid to programme, <span id=\"urn:batch-analysis-0b0efe21-f9e0-4a76-88df-1c42f85afec2\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-no-link wl-other\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/programmer\">programmers<\/span> get paid to think. The sitting down at a keyboard and tapping away is just a consequence of the thinking, that\u2019s not actually what you get paid to do.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Paul says that the biggest challenge in his career was accepting that his soft skills were his greatest strength and a valuable asset.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGoing through this mental leap that what you bring to the table is your soft skills can be a struggle. For me, embracing the fact that the technology side for me was that I could do it but I wasn\u2019t great at it was one of the best lessons I learned.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Although considered an <span id=\"urn:batch-analysis-4da88a3b-f75a-4da4-ba52-8b4b0bc2ad36\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-no-link wl-other\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/expert\">expert<\/span> in his field, Paul\u2019s ambition is a simple one: to be happy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI always had a singular focus on doing things that I enjoyed. I just always had a strong feeling that if I wasn\u2019t enjoying something I\u2019m probably not going to be any good, whatever the output is. I always ask myself am I doing the best thing I could be doing right now? Am I enjoying what I\u2019m doing? I moved around a little <span id=\"urn:batch-analysis-5e9b21ae-3503-4cd3-95c0-c9ea72526d82\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-no-link wl-other\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/bit\">bit<\/span> to optimise happiness and therefore output. Over the years this has worked well for me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Joining Zalando, a <span id=\"urn:batch-analysis-32569094-4d04-47ca-95ce-92040a583b9b\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-no-link wl-other\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/ember_company\">company<\/span> with a huge <span id=\"urn:batch-analysis-aa38c98a-9ceb-4466-8f53-7cd45f472e99\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-no-link wl-other\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/workforce\">workforce<\/span> and rapid growth, was an exciting prospect, particularly living in <span id=\"urn:batch-analysis-e7855b78-634c-4b7a-a3ff-c047c891fa41\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-no-link wl-other\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/berlin\">Berlin<\/span>, the city of start-ups.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s a startup on every street corner. That\u2019s a super-interesting environment to be working in; there\u2019s a lot of opportunity and a lot of interesting problems being solved. In amongst all of these small businesses and all the chaos that they bring to the table \u2013 which is a good thing by the way \u2013 out comes this <span id=\"urn:batch-analysis-464d5e08-eead-4c88-8871-18ab895eceac\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-no-link wl-other\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/ember_company\">company<\/span> that began life 10 years ago selling flip-flops. That\u2019s how Zalando started \u2013 literally only selling flip-flops online to the <span id=\"urn:batch-analysis-5590144e-3f28-4cf2-8f10-37481d408d2a\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-no-link wl-other\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/berlin\">Berlin<\/span> market. Ten years later it\u2019s got 16,000 employees. By Berlin standards it\u2019s huge and therefore it\u2019s got gravity,\u201d says Paul.<\/p>\n<p>It was the size of the <span id=\"urn:batch-analysis-f154b0c3-7504-47ff-bde1-7a06613f5bea\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-no-link wl-other\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/ember_company\">company<\/span> that was the biggest challenge. As the <span id=\"urn:batch-analysis-a1b45fa8-fc2e-441d-843e-decd950a0982\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-no-link wl-other\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/ember_company\">company<\/span> grew, one team became several <span id=\"urn:batch-analysis-4bdf02bc-cb30-472b-a45e-4c548163a0da\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-no-link wl-other\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/team\">teams<\/span> and eventually a <span id=\"urn:batch-analysis-99056b1a-9bbc-4b0b-9764-18f44148a4f1\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-no-link wl-other\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/community\">community<\/span>, with a need for a different approach.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs you grow and you become more of a <span id=\"urn:batch-analysis-096a2d3d-b602-4c33-a426-0facf07619e4\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-no-link wl-other\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/community\">community<\/span> than a <span id=\"urn:batch-analysis-0b831a08-cc3e-417d-81a0-ba0185aec4fc\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-no-link wl-other\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/team\">team<\/span>, you need to start acting differently if you want to build a great product. The things you did when you were four engineers do not apply when you\u2019re eight engineers and certainly do not apply when you\u2019re 3,000 engineers. Most of what I\u2019ll be talking about at the <span id=\"urn:batch-analysis-4a29408e-373d-4cde-9900-75e96c9efe73\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-no-link wl-other\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/berlin\">Berlin<\/span> conference is how we learn and apply <span id=\"urn:batch-analysis-4996bc2c-773e-4087-8102-b459d3a0bfb8\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-no-link wl-other\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/best_practice\">best practice<\/span> from <span id=\"urn:batch-analysis-788fe30e-5185-480f-a927-192cc647d239\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-no-link wl-other\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/open_source\">Open Source<\/span>. When you have 3,000 engineers in a large <span id=\"urn:batch-analysis-e39b4a4e-df21-4c2f-918f-400a6139c87e\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-no-link wl-other\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/ember_company\">company<\/span>, how do you steward them to make a great product? How do big organisations like Zalando make Zalando happen?\u201d says Paul.<\/p>\n<p>His advice for the next generation of developers?<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDon\u2019t be afraid to be you and do what\u2019s right for you. I wouldn\u2019t be doing my <span id=\"urn:batch-analysis-ac4869ed-f736-4714-8aaa-aa3329be8780\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-no-link wl-other\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/job\">job<\/span> if I didn\u2019t love it. Don\u2019t be afraid to follow what actually interests you strongly.
