Almost everything we do goes through a screen, from booking medical appointments to paying bills or enrolling in classes. Each task requires an account, a password, and often, an app.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But what if managing all that <strong>didn\u2019t mean handing your personal data to Google, Microsoft, or Apple<\/strong>?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-europe-s-digital-life-convenient-yet-dependent\">Europe\u2019s digital life: convenient, yet dependent<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Life in Europe is more digital than ever. However, many people, especially older citizens or those without digital training, feel increasingly excluded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They\u2019re not just tired of remembering passwords. They\u2019re also <strong>the most vulnerable to phishing attacks and weak password reuse<\/strong>. Therefore, when we talk about <strong>European digital sovereignty<\/strong>, this is where the conversation should begin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dependence on foreign tech doesn\u2019t only threaten privacy, it also limits equal access. In fact, the digital divide already separates those who master technology from those who can\u2019t use it safely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-a-system-that-locks-people-out\">A system that locks people out<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Think about the last time you forgot a password. Now imagine being 75, trying to book a doctor\u2019s appointment, and not remembering if it had a capital letter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Most people end up taking risky shortcuts:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Reusing the same password everywhere.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Writing them down in a notebook.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Letting browsers store them and hoping for the best.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>As a result, one weak password can lead to <strong>identity theft, bank fraud, or data leaks<\/strong>. Moreover, the more services we use, the more personal information we share, often without realizing it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That\u2019s why each new login increases the chance of <strong>giving data to companies we don\u2019t know or trust<\/strong>. Consequently, we face <strong>spam calls, targeted ads, and unwanted tracking<\/strong> that erodes our privacy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-when-confusion-becomes-a-business-model\">When confusion becomes a business model<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Many so-called \u201cfree\u201d services are only free because they profit from our data. They collect, enrich, and sell it to advertisers. In doing so, they turn our daily activity into a source of revenue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Even worse, some of that money funds <strong>lobbying efforts against European values<\/strong>. For example, it may support deregulation, surveillance, or weaker data protection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Meanwhile, the <strong>EU\u2019s privacy and digital sovereignty goals<\/strong> are quietly undermined by the same tools Europeans rely on every day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-europe-is-already-building\">What Europe is already building<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Fortunately, the European Union isn\u2019t ignoring the problem. In fact, several major initiatives are already underway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Projects like <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/digital-strategy.ec.europa.eu\/en\/policies\/eidas-regulation\">eIDAS 2.0<\/a><\/strong> and the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/trusted-digital-identity.europa.eu\/index_en\">European Digital Identity Wallet<\/a><\/strong> aim to create a trusted, secure framework for citizens to store official documents. Eight countries are already testing the wallet, which could hold IDs, driver\u2019s licences, or health certificates safely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Similarly, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/gaia-x.eu\/what-is-gaia-x\">Gaia-X<\/a><\/strong> seeks to build a federated European cloud that guarantees local control over data and services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, one key element is still missing; a public digital space where citizens can:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Use a free, secure email account <strong>independent from commercial providers<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Log in to public or private services with a <strong>universal digital ID<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Control when and with whom their data is shared.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>That\u2019s what a <strong>European public digital identity<\/strong> could deliver.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-a-true-public-digital-identity-could-look-like\">What a true public digital identity could look like<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>A people-centered system could include several essential components. Here\u2019s what it might involve.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-1-a-european-public-email-service\">1. A European public email service<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>End-to-end encrypted by default and hosted within the EU. It should also be compatible with open standards like IMAP, SMTP, and JMAP.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This would allow citizens to communicate securely without relying on Big Tech or having their emails scanned for ads.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-2-a-universal-digital-id\">2. A universal digital ID<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Based on <strong>self-sovereign identity (SSI)<\/strong> models, it would let people prove age or residency <strong>without exposing personal data<\/strong>. For instance, it could confirm eligibility for public services without sharing unnecessary details.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-3-a-unified-consent-dashboard\">3. A unified consent dashboard<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>A single place to review, approve, or revoke what services can access. Additionally, it would follow <strong>GDPR<\/strong> rules under supervision from an independent EU authority.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-4-a-federated-and-secure-login-system\">4. A federated and secure login system<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Built on <strong>OpenID Connect<\/strong>, but hosted in Europe. It would support modern authentication methods such as <strong>passkeys, FIDO2, or smartcards<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-5-open-apis-for-developers\">5. Open APIs for developers<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>APIs would enable both public and private services to integrate secure verification easily. In short, <strong>data would only be shared when strictly necessary<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Imagine logging into your healthcare portal or local library with <strong>one trusted identity<\/strong>. No more passwords. No more giving your email to companies that monetize your data.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-why-it-matters-now\">Why it matters now<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If we don\u2019t act, the <strong>digital divide<\/strong> will keep widening. Vulnerable groups will fall further behind, and people with fewer resources will remain the most exposed to scams and exploitation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the same time, Europe will stay dependent on global corporations <strong>whose goals don\u2019t always align with the public interest<\/strong>. That\u2019s why a <strong>European public digital identity<\/strong> isn\u2019t just an option; it\u2019s a chance to reclaim digital autonomy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It won\u2019t solve everything, but it could offer a foundation built on trust rather than trade-offs.
