    Businesses<\/span> around the globe are investing in digitization<\/span>. While the demand for business<\/span> applications<\/span> is outstripping supply by a factor of five<\/a>, CIOs<\/span> and IT leaders are competing for talent to get this elusive full-stack developer<\/span> (whoever he or she may be) onboard, or fighting for data scientists and machine learning<\/span> experts<\/span> to join their teams.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    However, a new survey<\/span> has revealed some surprising results about the gap between organisational decisions and developers<\/span>. Mendix<\/a>, a Siemens<\/span> business<\/span> and the global leader in enterprise low-code, recently announced key findings from a survey<\/span> designed to capture attitudes and perceptions held by enterprise software developers<\/span>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The Mendix-commissioned survey<\/span> was completed by 1,000 business<\/span> and 1,000 IT professionals. It has found that some ideas and mindsets around the separation of work between business<\/span> and IT teams<\/span> appear to be entrenched in a previous era, and are causing serious issues for companies<\/span> attempting to adapt business<\/span> processes<\/span> to cope with the COVID-19<\/a> pandemic. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

    More specifically, the survey<\/span> revealed that both business<\/span> and IT professionals place a surprisingly low priority on the need for developers<\/span> to understand business<\/span> needs. At the same time, business<\/span> professionals say they are willing to tackle application<\/span> development<\/span> themselves, if they have access to the right tools<\/span>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Other key findings indicate a pressing need for greater cross-functional collaboration<\/span> between the business<\/span> and IT sides of the enterprise<\/span>, and for a sharper focus on the user<\/span> experience. I spoke to Jon Scolamiero, Mendix manager, architecture and governance to find out more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Under-prioritizing the business problem<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    Just 9.4 percent of business<\/span> professionals surveyed believe developers<\/span> need to understand the business<\/span> \u2014 a shockingly low percentage. But IT professionals themselves seem to agree \u2014 just 11.4 percent say understanding the business<\/span> is a necessary developer<\/span> skill<\/span>. And yet 66 percent of business<\/span> professionals say they expect developers<\/span> to help them solve their business<\/span> problems. These numbers reveal a gaping discrepancy between what businesses<\/span> need and expect and the skills<\/span> valued in developers<\/span> to deliver on those needs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Dissecting the Disconnect<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    Clear communication<\/span> between business<\/span> units and IT teams is essential as organisations embrace digitalization<\/span>. This is often highlighted by leading industry analysts as imperative for successfully launching innovative technology solutions and user<\/span> experiences. Despite the recommendation however, only 24 percent of business<\/span> professionals say they consider developers<\/span> communicative. Further, only 35 percent believe developers<\/span> are collaborative<\/span> (whereas 48 percent of IT professionals describe developers<\/span> as collaborative<\/span>). Over half (54.2 percent) of business<\/span> respondents believe that the IT team is solely responsible for software development, which would indicate a pervasive lack of involvement by business<\/span> stakeholders in the development process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    \u201cEnterprises that are serious about digital transformation must ensure their teams are in sync, especially while we are all adjusting to the \u2018new normal.\u201d <\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

    In this ever-changing environment, decision-makers<\/span> require input on the enterprise’s critical needs and capabilities from a broad range of stakeholders, and must organize<\/span> that into a workable roadmap.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    We\u2019re not in a world anymore where projects can just be handed off to a development<\/span> team<\/span> to handle. Everyone\u2019s brain needs to be engaged throughout the whole process<\/span>. The business<\/span> team<\/span> must stay actively engaged in the evolution of an application<\/span>. The development<\/span> team<\/span> needs to be fully immersed in the organisation’s needs, strategy<\/span>, and customer preferences. If there is no collaboration<\/span> on all these fronts, the resulting application<\/span> is going to be just adequate at best, a failure<\/span> at worst.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Are users and UX being left behind?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    Survey respondents were asked about the developer<\/span> skills<\/span> required to tackle digitalization<\/span>. As might be expected, technical know-how and fluency in programming languages<\/span> topped the list of necessary skills<\/span>. But just 12.5 percent of business<\/span> and 9.2 percent of IT respondents consider \u201csense for user<\/span> experience\u201d to be a necessary development skill<\/span>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

    These numbers suggest that understanding and addressing the needs and wants of users<\/span> is a sorely undervalued skill<\/span> for developers<\/span>. It also suggests that either developers<\/span> need to hone their UX<\/span> skills<\/span>, or that UX professionals<\/a> need to be at the developer<\/span>\u2019s side throughout the process<\/span>. And certainly, the business<\/span> stakeholders need to be vigilant guardians of the user<\/span> experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Should<\/strong> <\/mark>Managers do Development?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    About half of all respondents feel that developer<\/span> teams struggle to find time <\/a>for new projects. Given the development backlog \u2014 about half of all respondents feel developer<\/span> teams struggle to find time for new projects \u2014 business<\/span> stakeholders were asked if they\u2019d be willing to attempt developing an app on their own. Nearly 9 out of 10 said yes, if a tool<\/span> was available that did not require specialized programming skills<\/span>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Jon shares:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    “Citizen developers<\/span>\u2019 are becoming more-and-more important to meet an organization\u2019s need to create the efficiencies and solutions businesses<\/span> need today. There simply isn\u2019t enough capacity to get it all done at competitive scale and velocity, especially with the current crisis. With low-code tools<\/span> that are available right now, for example, business<\/span> stakeholders can map out an enterprise<\/span> app visually and build it in collaboration<\/span> with the development team, or they could even build the whole thing themselves, depending on its complexity<\/span>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Conversely, by working in such close concert with their business<\/span> counterparts, developers<\/span> can quickly get a better understanding of the business<\/span> and customer needs.
