Financial doesn\u2019t mean economic: bitcoin enabled the creation of an economy with a <span id=\"urn:enhancement-ba6a6ed5\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/digital_currency\">digital currency<\/span>, and recent evolutions in blockchain technology (since <span id=\"urn:enhancement-c720a1df\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/ethereum\">Ethereum<\/span>) have enabled numerous <span id=\"urn:enhancement-9cb4ecb9\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/decentralization\">decentralized<\/span> and <span id=\"urn:enhancement-346f2a28\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/centralisation\">centralized<\/span> blockchains and <span id=\"urn:enhancement-b420028c\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/application_software\">applications<\/span> to take advantage of permanent-ledger characteristics. In simple terms, this has led to the current phenomenon known as DeFi, or <span id=\"urn:enhancement-f0e13e6c\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/decentralization\">Decentralized<\/span> Finance. DeFi consists in an (ever more rapidly growing) number of <span id=\"urn:enhancement-e89fb0ca\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/decentralization\">decentralized<\/span> <span id=\"urn:enhancement-2c7e7a16\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/application_software\">applications<\/span> that allow already-established financial systems to be even more usable and automated. These include compound finance, EthLend, Eidoo, MakerDAO, DAI, Synthetix and so on. A complete list of current DeFi <span id=\"urn:enhancement-486ec765\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/mobile_app\">apps<\/span> can be found <a href=\"https:\/\/defiprime.com\/\">here<\/a><strong>.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>DeFi <span id=\"urn:enhancement-732bf33c\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/mobile_app\">apps<\/span> don\u2019t involve major technological improvements, but a lot of work needs to be done to address the potential for exploitation of the current system structure. A lot of so-called <em>hacks <\/em>have been reported in DeFi <span id=\"urn:enhancement-6f7b3351\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/mobile_app\">apps<\/span> since June 2016&#8217;s hack of \u2018The DAO\u2019  in which $50 milion was stolen. There are two kinds of <em><span id=\"urn:enhancement-49b43c93\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/attack_computing\">attacks<\/span><\/em>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Real code attacks<\/strong>: hacks in which thieves take advantage of a vulnerability in the code and use this to steal funds or create huge amounts of digital currency;<\/li><li><strong>Financial attacks<\/strong>: these are not real hacks, as thieves leverage the <em>limits <\/em>of one or more DeFi apps at the same time. The most recent one is the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.coindesk.com\/attacker-drains-decentralized-protocol-dforce-of-25m-in-weekend-attack\">weekend attack on dForce<\/a> that wiped out $25 milion.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Both types of attacks can be addressed by future improvements, but in different ways. Being on top of newly-discovered routes for exploitation (and hopefully resolving them) is a great way to both improve mastery of blockchain-related code and help the whole ecosystem grow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-cultural\">Cultural<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Cultural advancements don\u2019t directly affect <span id=\"urn:enhancement-96c6d534\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/high_tech\">tech<\/span> improvements, but they <span id=\"urn:enhancement-a1f7de8c\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/stack_abstract_data_type\">push<\/span> the ecosystem to grow to meet demand. For example, <strong><span id=\"urn:enhancement-87914a32\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/coinbase\">Coinbase<\/span><\/strong> successfully offered an ultra-simple way of buying <span id=\"urn:enhancement-81b383e6\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/cryptocurrency\">cryptocurrencies<\/span> with credit cards. <strong>Binance<\/strong> then built an empire of crypto exchanges that support hundreds of currencies and comply with laws in an ever-growing number of countries. These are considered <em>cultural <\/em>advancements because they drive adoption closer to the mainstream public. More <span id=\"urn:enhancement-5841ab02\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/people\">people<\/span> using crypto means that <span id=\"urn:enhancement-962a2333\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/blockchain\">blockchains<\/span> need to be more secure, more <span id=\"urn:enhancement-d19d3231\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/scalability\">scalable<\/span>, and more <span id=\"urn:enhancement-9e74e737\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/decentralization\">decentralized<\/span> to address the needs of a growing audience. In some respects, tech advancements can bring cultural attention to a new level that then leads to a growing need to adjust <span id=\"urn:enhancement-eb35ebd2\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/high_tech\">tech<\/span> in order to meet demand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Keeping track of cultural advancements is a good way to anticipate new waves of tech improvement in the Blockchain <span id=\"urn:enhancement-3a596d0e\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/industry\">industry<\/span> as a whole.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-political\">Political<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Political advancements are the most complex: there needs to be a combined effort towards tech, cultural and financial advancement in order for governments and political institutions in general to accept Blockchain standards. But politics comes to the forefront once society is talking loud and clear about changes needed to the overall <span id=\"urn:enhancement-4cbced34\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/system\">system<\/span>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To explain this, it\u2019s easier to take examples from recent (and persistent) dynamics around society and crypto (or Blockchain in general):<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>In Venezuela, the country\u2019s currency had already been suffering from inflation for a long time, but the situation worsened when the United States government prohibited domestic investors from pouring money into Venezuelan companies and institutions. That led President Maduro to take an unprecedented decision about the nation&#8217;s currency: integrating (substituting) it with a Petro digital currency, that was (and is) pegged to the nation&#8217;s oil reserve. This was the first real step toward a national digital currency, even though it was inspired by the<em> necessity of bypassing the US veto<\/em>.<\/li><li>In Argentina (primarily) and other Latin American countries, people buy bitcoin or other cryptocurrencies to defend their financial reserves from hyperinflation of national currencies. A lot of both underground and official initiatives to <em>help poor people get access to financial tools that can jumpstart a small business or enable a micro-economy in poor and rural areas<\/em> exist.<\/li><li>In China, Blockchain is part of the mainstream discussion, as people are used to exchanging money and services on apps and websites such as Tencent\u2019s WeChat, and already buy digital coupons as gifts. China\u2019s government is researching the use of a digital currency built on a permissioned distributed ledger (comparable to the Blockchain) to <em>centralize the economy<\/em>.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>These are just a few (extreme) examples of what <em>the discussion <\/em>about <span id=\"urn:enhancement-ebe99776\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/blockchain\">Blockchain<\/span> has led to.
