    Bluetooth<\/span>\u00ae mesh was released in 2017. It allows the creation of secure networks of tens of thousands of Bluetooth<\/span> devices and the creation of truly smart, self-optimising buildings, with sensors<\/span>, lights, air-conditioning units and more, all working wirelessly and automatically together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Martin Woolley, Senior Developer Relations at<\/span> Bluetooth SIG<\/span><\/a>, will be<\/span> presenting a webinar<\/span><\/a> on July 1st about Bluetooth<\/span> mesh networks<\/span> and how to develop smartphone<\/span> apps<\/span> to monitor and control these networks using a GUI<\/span> application<\/span>. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    How is Bluetooth technology used?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    Bluetooth<\/span> Low Energy (Bluetooth<\/span> LE) is a form of wireless<\/span> communication<\/span>. It’s particularly useful in scenarios battery life is preferred over high data transfer<\/span> speeds. Most people<\/span> experience Bluetooth<\/span> daily. It might be the transfer of data<\/span> through a wearable device that tracks their steps. Or wireless<\/span> entertainment via wireless<\/span> headphones<\/span> or a speaker. Or through location tracking and positioning. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Bluetooth<\/span> LE beacons<\/span> have been used in many electronic devices<\/span> since 2013, and have attracted considerable attention lately due to the creation of contact tracing apps in response to COVID-19<\/a>. Bluetooth<\/span> LE beacons<\/span> are like small lighthouses which can send signals to nearby devices such as smartphones<\/span>. Bluetooth<\/span> LE beacons<\/span> offer a way of determining location when GPS<\/span> is not suitable. Beacons do not receive signals or collect data<\/span>. Instead, when a designated app<\/span> detects such a signal, it sends information back to the server<\/span> of the company or organisation that placed the Bluetooth LE<\/span> beacon.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Location tracking and positioning use cases<\/span> include the placement of beacons in a shopping centre where they are placed to track the trajectory of shopping and which items they spend the most time browsing. In response, an in-house app<\/span> could send out an alert such as a QR code<\/span> for a discount on multiple purchases. In combination, the tracking data<\/span> provide detailed customer insights for store planners, retailer, and marketers. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The power of Bluetooth mesh<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    Bluetooth mesh networking<\/span> means the connection of “many devices to many”, or as Martin likes to describe it “10s of thousands of smart devices<\/span> in a network where anything can talk to anything. And you’re not constrained by radio transmission<\/span> range either. So normally, if a Bluetooth<\/span> device needs to talk to some other device, it has to be within range. But with mesh networking<\/span>, that’s not the case because messages<\/span> they kind of hop across the network. In a network, you can do up to 127 hops, and the range of each hop is hundreds of metres. Thus the mesh network<\/span> can cover a vast area.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    A critical use case<\/span> is smart buildings<\/span> where “you can equip your smart building<\/span> with an entire network that covers the whole building maybe a whole business<\/span> campus or collection of buildings.” In smart buildings<\/span>, energy costs can be reduced with “the use of really smart technology<\/span> that can dynamically adjust the parameters of all the buildings, devices, and systems<\/span>, so that energy is used in the most optimal possible way.” An example is daylight harvesting, where sensors<\/span> dynamically feed information back to the collection of lights in the building and turn their brightness  up or down depending on the amount of sunlight. And it’s not just a smart light, “It’s a computer processor that can be put in a Bluetooth<\/span> mesh network<\/span>.”<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Lights are permanently powered and will always be in buildings, and now you can deploy software<\/span> across your network of lights. “So the lighting industry is beginning to realise that things like lighting will become IT infrastructure<\/span>, and all sorts of completely new things become possible But only if they’re networked by a reliable, scalable<\/span>, secure, standards<\/span>-based technology<\/span> like Bluetooth<\/span>. You don’t want something that’s got proprietary<\/span> bits and pieces in it because it’s not future-proof and you will be locked-in to that technology<\/span>. Much better to adopt something which is an open standard<\/span> like Bluetooth<\/span>. Anyone can download<\/span> the specifications, and you’re all set for the future with a 20-year history behind Bluetooth technology<\/span>.<\/span>“<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Notably, there’s a lack of credible competitors to Bluetooth LE<\/span>, Martin notes, <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    “But in the world of mesh networking<\/span>, we were kind of quite late to the party that so there are several others, one of which is called Thread<\/span> and is owned by Google<\/span>. However, at the beginning of last year, there were only two qualified, certified Thread<\/span> devices on the market, and it’s older than Bluetooth mesh.” By contrast, there are nearly <\/span>600 qualified Bluetooth mesh products<\/span><\/a> already, which represents an astonishing rate of adoption.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    What are the opportunities for developers?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    According to Martin, “Bluetooth<\/span> mesh is an opportunity for several types of developers<\/span>. Embedded software<\/span> engineers need to learn about Bluetooth<\/span> mesh to really understand how to write the code that runs inside the microcontroller that’s inside the light or other device. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    There are also opportunities for people<\/span> like smartphone<\/span> developers<\/span> and UX folk<\/a> because whilst most of the communication<\/span> in a mesh network<\/span> is between devices that might have a simple button on them. there is also a requirement<\/span> for human beings to be able to monitor and control the entire network. And they need graphical user interfaces<\/span> running on tablets<\/span>, smartphones<\/span>, desktop computers<\/span>, etc. Desktop<\/span> developers<\/span>, <\/span>mobile developers<\/span><\/a>, and web developers<\/span> even can create applications<\/span> for Bluetooth<\/span> mesh.”<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Tools for Developers to build mesh networking<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    Developer<\/span> kits are available through companies<\/span> such as Silicon Labs<\/span> and Nordic Semiconductor<\/span>, to give but two examples. There are also open source<\/span> offerings like the Linux<\/span> Foundation’s<\/span> Zephyr Project<\/span><\/a> that has absolutely superb support for Bluetooth<\/span> mesh. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Martin details: “My talk will cover some of the concepts and topics developers<\/span> need to understand. We also have several study guides at Bluetooth<\/span>, self-paced hands-on resources<\/span>.”<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Martin notes, “I think most developers<\/span> learn best by doing. So we have resources<\/span> for Bluetooth<\/span> mesh embedded<\/span> developers<\/span>. We also have one specifically for smartphone<\/span> and web developers<\/span> who want to create dashboards for use with mesh networks<\/span>. So we’re quite well placed to help developers<\/span> clamber up that learning curve<\/span>.”<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Bluetooth LE Audio is a game changer for hearable tech<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    Bluetooth<\/span> technology<\/span> is leading to game-changing audio with the introduction of LE Audio which operates on the Bluetooth<\/span> Low Energy radio<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Martin explains: “It’s much more power-efficient. It has a new audio codec<\/span>, which gives higher quality audio. It let’s do things you couldn’t do before. So with the old Bluetooth<\/span> technology and audio, it’s really just one source of audio, one receiver of audio and that’s it. With LE audio, you can do audio sharing<\/span>. So with friends and one phone, we can all listen to the same music at the same time. Because of an underlying technical change called Isochronous Channels, I can have totally independent earbuds<\/span> and multiple content streams simultaneously.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    An example is sitting on a plane wearing Bluetooth LE<\/span> audio headphones<\/span>, and a safety briefing comes on. The same audio broadcast<\/span> could be heard in multiple languages, and you get to select the one you want. Or you could choose the language you want to listen to while watching a film and the cinema.” <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    This is also significant for hearing impaired users and the hearing aid industry for which there are no standards for wireless technology. “So a good proportion of our working group that’s helped create LE audio is from the hearing aid industry.”<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Martin notes, “The great thing is that people will come up with applications for Bluetooth LE that we didn’t think of. They might start with something proprietary. But if it’s a good idea, it tends to come back in and become a standard. So yes, it will be quite interesting to see what happens with multiple content streams and broadcast capability. And so that’s exciting.”<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n
