Practices such as mentoring and&nbsp;pair programming&nbsp;and how they recruit great <span style=\"user-select: auto;\" id=\"urn:enhancement-dc67fa52\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/team\">teams<\/span>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"eplus-mkzbGG wp-block-heading\">What are the responsibilities of a great manager?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"eplus-xkE792\">Alessandro (Cirpo) Cinelli, Engineering Manager at DAZN,&nbsp;told us:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"eplus-SE6rwT\">&#8220;My main <span id=\"urn:enhancement-1425f83d\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/job\">job<\/span> is to make <span id=\"urn:enhancement-643033dd\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/people\">people<\/span> happy and productive in the <span id=\"urn:enhancement-5ca88ec9\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/team\">team<\/span>, at a <span id=\"urn:enhancement-97e75317\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/team\">team<\/span> level and individual level. A good engineer manager has to be technical, but with a solid technical background. They should also be able to talk the same language as other developers, so they should be able to code.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"eplus-GgAEQm\">&nbsp;Dan Persa, Engineering lead at Zalando,&nbsp;spoke&nbsp;at Codemotion Amsterdam in 2019. He asserts that:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote eplus-Gxpu9D is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>&#8220;As leaders, it&#8217;s our responsibility to inspire people to give them purpose, to show them how their effort contributes to a bigger cause something bigger than themselves to explain the why behind the how and what.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"eplus-xC6fyi\">A good manager can provide a bridge between <span id=\"urn:enhancement-e2e01268\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/team\">teams<\/span>, be a buffer between senior management and individuals, and foster a great sense of <span id=\"urn:enhancement-818fd9ec\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/collaboration\">collaboration<\/span> between individuals within a department.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"eplus-wPNb3n wp-block-heading\">Your leadership role is more than a title<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"eplus-7Vvkp4\">Whether your official title is CTO, Team Lead, Engineering Management, or another leadership permutation, the reality is that any tech manager encompasses a broad array of <span style=\"user-select: auto;\" id=\"urn:enhancement-d7a78994\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/skill\">skills<\/span> both technical, practical, and psychological. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"eplus-hqYpgY\">CTOs and <span style=\"user-select: auto;\" id=\"urn:enhancement-eefd381f\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/team\">team<\/span> leads in young <span style=\"user-select: auto;\" id=\"urn:enhancement-24f917f8\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/company\">companies<\/span> and startups are likely to experience fundamental shifts in their day to day tasks, and responsibilities as the <span style=\"user-select: auto;\" id=\"urn:enhancement-6e05f8bc\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/company\">company<\/span> evolves from <span style=\"user-select: auto;\" id=\"urn:enhancement-5e0e5347\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/idea\">ideas<\/span> to product delivery and the <span style=\"user-select: auto;\" id=\"urn:enhancement-889dad47\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/company\">company<\/span> grows its <span style=\"user-select: auto;\" id=\"urn:enhancement-6452d624\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/customer_base\">customer base<\/span> and staffing size. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"eplus-GfEw2B\">George Xing, head of <span style=\"user-select: auto;\" id=\"urn:enhancement-c074912\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/analytics\">analytics<\/span> at Lyft spoke at Codemotion Berlin in 2019 about&nbsp;his experience as Lyft scaled&nbsp;over five years from a fledgeling startup to a household name. The analytics department was heavily involved in assisting that expansion, providing analytical solutions to difficulties with hiring. George notes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"eplus-h3Tstw\">&#8220;When you&#8217;re growing really fast, you&#8217;re going to need managers. It&#8217;s almost always easier at that point to find somebody on your <span style=\"user-select: auto;\" id=\"urn:enhancement-afa1a346\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/team\">team<\/span> to promote. And in my case, the first person I hired ended up taking on the majority of the <span style=\"user-select: auto;\" id=\"urn:enhancement-1d82542b\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/people\">people<\/span> that we hired between seven and 12. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"eplus-nmejJv\">And then the third person that I hired ended up scaling the <span style=\"user-select: auto;\" id=\"urn:enhancement-c2c5d8e8\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/team\">team<\/span> even more. Both of them today are phenomenal leaders managing large teams, the first person is managing a 50 person <span style=\"user-select: auto;\" id=\"urn:enhancement-9ffcfc34\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/team\">team<\/span>, and then the second person, she had to move to New York where she is now the general manager of New York, managing a 100 person <span style=\"user-select: auto;\" id=\"urn:enhancement-1624c285\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/team\">team<\/span>.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"eplus-SFyPwA wp-block-heading\">Soft skills are essential skills in management<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"eplus-ZCoWcI\">Contributing to the growth of the tech <span id=\"urn:enhancement-f1c6c9b\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/team\">team<\/span> and creating an R&amp;D area to assess new <span id=\"urn:enhancement-3fc1caa1\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/technology\">technologies<\/span> are useful responsibilities for a manager, particularly a CTO.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"eplus-XqYbFf\">However, being a manager is not only about making technical decisions, but it also requires&nbsp;soft skills, which I like to call essential <span style=\"user-select: auto;\" id=\"urn:enhancement-533a9817\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/skill\">skills<\/span>. Soft <span style=\"user-select: auto;\" id=\"urn:enhancement-d4590ee4\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/skill\">skills<\/span> refer to an <span style=\"user-select: auto;\" id=\"urn:enhancement-5d5a9c28\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/skill\">ability<\/span> to understand yourself and your emotions and those of others. A brilliant developer may have stellar coding <span style=\"user-select: auto;\" id=\"urn:enhancement-627767a2\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/skill\">skills<\/span>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"eplus-eHMyL9\">But if they are hard to get along with, unable to follow instructions, or contribute <span style=\"user-select: auto;\" id=\"urn:enhancement-c047692a\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/idea\">ideas<\/span> to <span style=\"user-select: auto;\" id=\"urn:enhancement-4bb49f06\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/team\">team<\/span> brainstorming they&#8217;ll find their <span style=\"user-select: auto;\" id=\"urn:enhancement-423d9243\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/role\">role<\/span> may stagnant, and they&#8217;ll struggle to progress outside of their existing <span style=\"user-select: auto;\" id=\"urn:enhancement-37b389d9\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/role\">role<\/span> when applying for new <span style=\"user-select: auto;\" id=\"urn:enhancement-a2673b81\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/job\">jobs<\/span>. Likewise, a manager that struggles to listen, lacks empathy or is unapproachable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"eplus-MbgDt7\">Soft <span id=\"urn:enhancement-36e256b0\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/skill\">skills<\/span> can be taught, but they involve time, effort, and continual reflection and reinforcement. Having the ability to understand other <span id=\"urn:enhancement-55a89018\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/people\">people<\/span> and be understood yourself is a critical part of <span id=\"urn:enhancement-deafa05c\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/media_communication\">communication<\/span>, and it&#8217;s not only about the <span id=\"urn:enhancement-e310f09f\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/knowledge\">knowledge<\/span> you possess but how well you can explain it.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"eplus-nSVjdH\">A great manager can make <span id=\"urn:enhancement-d84fdc34\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/people\">people<\/span> feel valued and respected. They support <span id=\"urn:enhancement-306bed67\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/team\">team<\/span> members in their personal <span id=\"urn:enhancement-b9116299\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/goal\">goals<\/span>, and ultimately make the <span id=\"urn:enhancement-fa3d935d\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/workplace\">workplace<\/span> one where <span id=\"urn:enhancement-81ab96e1\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/people\">people<\/span> are happy to open their laptops every day and achieve great things for themselves, their <span id=\"urn:enhancement-d312ca32\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/team\">team<\/span>, and the <span id=\"urn:enhancement-5694ad02\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/company\">company<\/span>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"eplus-KC8JoV wp-block-heading\">Expect the unexpected: a manager is a leader in a crisis&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"eplus-ZreBcA\"><span style=\"user-select: auto;\" id=\"urn:enhancement-efe89b14\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/high_tech\">Tech<\/span> moves fast, and we can expect things always to be changing.&nbsp;The need for a leader is strong during crisis times when having somebody to take decisions, lower anxiety, and helps the <span style=\"user-select: auto;\" id=\"urn:enhancement-ed2064d6\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/team\">team<\/span> continue with everyday work. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"eplus-8C3IrQ\">Crisis management is an essential capability of a successful long-term leader.
