The second event in our series was <a style=\"user-select: auto;\" href=\"https:\/\/community.codemotion.com\/codemotion-eu\/meetups\/codemotion-meetup---the-multiple-faces-of-technical-leadership\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em style=\"user-select: auto;\">The multiple faces of technical leadership.<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"eplus-pGCDuE\">Head of <span id=\"urn:enhancement-c7c34c02\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/engineering\">Engineering<\/span> or <a style=\"user-select: auto;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.codemotion.com\/magazine\/dev-hub\/cto\/a-cto-in-the-making-what-skills-should-you-have\/\">Technical Director<\/a>? <span id=\"urn:enhancement-55be26ed\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/software\">Software<\/span> Architect or Principal <span id=\"urn:enhancement-5448880b\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/engineer\">Engineer<\/span>?<br>Different <span id=\"urn:enhancement-c3b148b8\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/company\">companies<\/span> use a variety of titles to describe similar <span id=\"urn:enhancement-48d960b0\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/role\">roles<\/span>, and sometimes the same title can define very different <span id=\"urn:enhancement-ad750617\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/job\">jobs<\/span>. In this session we explored how our panellists<br>shaped technical leadership roles in their technology organisations. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"eplus-Amjfm3\">We discussed how responsibilities are shaped, how they cascade within the org, and how the need for a <span id=\"urn:enhancement-86190aaf\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/role\">role<\/span> emerges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"eplus-oab75Y\">The event was moderated by&nbsp;Piergiorgio Niero &#8211; Head of <span id=\"urn:enhancement-b16b782b\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/engineering\">Engineering<\/span> at SuperAwesome.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"eplus-pBJdAU\">Our panelists:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"eplus-9HXT5M wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Anna Shipman<\/strong> &#8211;&nbsp; Technical Director at the <em>Financial Times<\/em><\/li><li><strong>Patrick Kua<\/strong> &#8211; Expert in Tehcnical leadership<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.codemotion.com\/magazine\/dev-hub\/cto\/creating-a-culture-of-responsibility-interview-with-omosola-odetunde\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Omosola Odetunde<\/strong><\/a> &#8211; Advisor for early-stage CTO&#8217;s<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"eplus-WXwn1e\">During the event participants were able to ask questions directly of the speakers and vote upon the most popular via <a href=\"https:\/\/passportloverblog.wordpress.com\/2017\/04\/05\/6-top-tips-for-creating-a-successful-dating-profile\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Mentimeter<\/a> and also were polled on a range of topics being discussed by the panellists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"eplus-YfUHj4\">We&#8217;re sharing just some of the themes covered by our panelists, take a look at the video below to enjoy the full discussion &#8211; it remains interesting and valuable to the end.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"eplus-5ELtXu\">[jwp-video n=&#8221;1&#8243;]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"eplus-62WIX5 wp-block-heading\">What are the most challenging parts of technical leadership at different stages of growth and how did you adapt?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"eplus-zRepl9\">Anna detailed the challenge around how to say no: &#8220;As an <span id=\"urn:enhancement-e63f49ce\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/engineer\">engineer<\/span> and senior <span id=\"urn:enhancement-275abee1\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/engineer\">engineer<\/span> you progress by volunteering for things. And as you become more senior, there are more things you can volunteer for, and still do to a good level. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"eplus-BRecyL\">And when I became a technical architect, somebody said to me, you&#8217;re going to have to start saying no to things that you really want to do things that you would really enjoy that you&#8217;re really going to knock out of the park, but&nbsp; just don&#8217;t meet your goals. So I think that was the first inflection point, was saying no to things I wanted to do. &#8220;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"eplus-C3kAIw\">Patrick explains this as &#8220;What got you here won&#8217;t get you there. When I was a <span id=\"urn:enhancement-246f3963\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/software_developer\">developer<\/span>, you&#8217;re building your <span id=\"urn:enhancement-2b32dd81\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/expert\">expertise<\/span> around your <span id=\"urn:enhancement-2d469194\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/technology\">technology<\/span>, your stack, your tooling. But when you get into a technical leadership <span id=\"urn:enhancement-75519fdd\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/role\">role<\/span>, you start to realise actually that sort of <span id=\"urn:enhancement-91d6b8a6\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/skill\">skill<\/span> set or help you with working with <span id=\"urn:enhancement-51af36c4\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/people\">people<\/span> and you have to rebuild <span id=\"urn:enhancement-90022ec2\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/skill\">skills<\/span> again. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"eplus-7t4cMi\">And you have to then start to understand how to resolve conflicts and particularly start to get buy-in from many other <span id=\"urn:enhancement-956c436d\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/people\">people<\/span> and work alongside other leadership roles, like a product owner or a product manager.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"eplus-Bq6Y8r\">This shifts again as an <span id=\"urn:enhancement-6c254cef\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/organization\">organisation<\/span> scales and instead of leading people, you&#8217;re &#8220;really trying to work on the <span id=\"urn:enhancement-74051fcb\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/structure\">structure<\/span> and the way that teams and organisations work effectively because it&#8217;s often the sort of <span id=\"urn:enhancement-9848ed83\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/structure\">structures<\/span> and processes that are really blocking <span id=\"urn:enhancement-c5dc31c8\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/people\">people<\/span> from getting work done.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"eplus-fqEFsy wp-block-heading\">The shift of the feedback loop in and the challenges of scale in technical leadership<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"eplus-wEuHDu\">Anna also notes that when you&#8217;re no longer writing code, when you&#8217;re more senior, the feedback loops are much slower. &#8220;So when you&#8217;re writing code, you get gratification quite quickly. However, the more senior the <span id=\"urn:enhancement-62954711\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/role\">role<\/span> and the larger the organisation, the longer those things take.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"eplus-yjPdTC\">In her work with early-stage <span id=\"urn:enhancement-818c05c8\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/company\">companies<\/span>, Omosola sees the challenge of the transition from the technical <span id=\"urn:enhancement-b846c829\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/entrepreneurship\">co-founder<\/span> to <span id=\"urn:enhancement-8fa7fa73\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/chief_technology_officer\">CTO<\/span> or another leadership position:&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"eplus-GHRvsl\">&#8220;I work with early <span id=\"urn:enhancement-945f56c6\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/entrepreneurship\">entrepreneurs<\/span> to help them figure out okay, do they even want to take on the role of a CTO? That&#8217;s the first question, is that something that&#8217;s interesting to them? Is that where they want to see the biggest challenge People also have to figure out how to work with other <span id=\"urn:enhancement-ca7b3fb5\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/people\">people<\/span> in larger <span id=\"urn:enhancement-906f6f0\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/team\">teams<\/span> and how to make technical <span id=\"urn:enhancement-6f438db5\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/decision-making\">decisions<\/span> feel comfortable with it, how to deal with people dynamics when they haven&#8217;t had to deal with it before and representing the organisation as a technical <span id=\"urn:enhancement-b3ee95c4\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/leadership\">leader<\/span>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"eplus-fl5bKE\">So a lot of these things happen very quickly, even after hiring on one additional engineer, but at least usually, by the time they&#8217;ve hired on three or three or four engineers, it comes up.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"eplus-LfrOBS wp-block-heading\">What are the main responsibilities of a senior technical leader?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"eplus-QFcI9z\">Most audience participants saw the <span id=\"urn:enhancement-84226a98\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/role\">role<\/span> of the technical <span id=\"urn:enhancement-401c72d3\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/leadership\">leadership<\/span> primarily to set technical vision and <span id=\"urn:enhancement-b9a7b99\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/strategy\">strategy<\/span> followed by &#8220;Lead\/inspire\/mange <span id=\"urn:enhancement-2a56fe6a\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/people\">people<\/span>&#8221; .<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image eplus-eM8HLP\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/passportloverblog.files.wordpress.com\/2020\/07\/screenshot-2020-07-22-at-14.18.34.jpeg\" alt=\"Screenshot 2020-07-22 at 14.18.34\" class=\"wp-image-13681\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"eplus-1uGBn2\">Omosola notes that she wanted to ensure she was in a <span id=\"urn:enhancement-47aa432c\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/decision-making\">decision making<\/span> <span id=\"urn:enhancement-7a35da19\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/role\">role<\/span> where her technical <span id=\"urn:enhancement-cc932175\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/expert\">expertise<\/span> could still be used. Therefore she working on projects such as an AI product <span id=\"urn:enhancement-331a3328\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/strategy\">strategy<\/span>: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote eplus-AAexvk is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>&#8220;That&#8217;s something where the rest of the team isn&#8217;t blocked. And I use this knowledge and expertise I have to keep myself excited and energised. And then when I come up with a strategy, I share it with the team and then assist people to actually implement it. So for me, that was a way to still keep my technical, bent and energy because I never really want to get too far away from that, while staying in a leadership role.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"eplus-4oXeS5 wp-block-heading\">Choose staff to take your job<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"eplus-dHcWPW\">Anna shares that prioritised hiring the right <span id=\"urn:enhancement-7007f8d7\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/people\">people<\/span> over vision and tech <span id=\"urn:enhancement-a7e14a9f\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/strategy\">strategy<\/span> &#8211; she wants to hire <span id=\"urn:enhancement-654c7780\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/people\">people<\/span> to take her <span id=\"urn:enhancement-8683eca5\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/job\">job<\/span> when she moves on: &#8220;So that&#8217;s partly about growing <span id=\"urn:enhancement-1f8a8286\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/people\">people<\/span> and that&#8217;s partly about hiring great <span id=\"urn:enhancement-98ae211a\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/people\">people<\/span> and building the <span id=\"urn:enhancement-d7c15ef4\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/team\">team<\/span>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"eplus-1ZsQ9s\">Initially, when I first started this <span id=\"urn:enhancement-4fdfae47\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/role\">role<\/span>, I found that there was so much work that I just didn&#8217;t pass on everything that came to me because it was just completely overwhelming. And I didn&#8217;t want to drown the <span id=\"urn:enhancement-7e843d65\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/people\">people<\/span>, my direct reports with all this information. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"eplus-Pza4A8\">But what actually ended up happening was if I didn&#8217;t pass something on, somebody might go around me or might go talk to them, it might come in from another angle, and they would have no idea that this <span id=\"urn:enhancement-c6d26008\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/conversation\">conversation<\/span> taking place. So now I share like as much context as possible. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"eplus-UqfQ10\">So that&#8217;s sending on emails that I&#8217;m inviting <span id=\"urn:enhancement-b414969e\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/people\">people<\/span> to come to meetings with me or stand in for meetings. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"eplus-SvXBs9\">And the idea there is if they have all the context that I have, then ideally they will start to be in a position where they can make the same kind of decision that I would make in that position and then I can step to the back and concentrate on even more high leverage activities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"eplus-cmpUTY wp-block-heading\">Manager vs Individual contributor<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"eplus-ucrTcM\">There was extensive <span id=\"urn:enhancement-b380afd5\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/conversation\">discussion<\/span> about what happens to highly experienced individual contributors as their <span id=\"urn:enhancement-6590b427\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/career\">career<\/span> progresses. What happens if you don&#8217;t want to become a <span id=\"urn:enhancement-e1f144be\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/talent_manager\">manager<\/span>? <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"eplus-74aq3z\">Anna suggests one <span id=\"urn:enhancement-4e9add46\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/strategy\">strategy<\/span> is involving such <span id=\"urn:enhancement-da2a1f1\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/people\">people<\/span> in growing and mentoring <span id=\"urn:enhancement-db7e6b74\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/people\">people<\/span>, &#8220;So splitting off the <span id=\"urn:enhancement-bc0a3c8d\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/talent_manager\">manager<\/span> track from individual contributor track where both can progress equally.
