What does it mean to your team?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"eplus-yPNlRd\">Chris asserts, &#8220;I think kind of for me, value is something that&#8217;s very <span id=\"urn:enhancement-83c88861\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/customer\">customer<\/span>-centric, what you&#8217;re doing is creating value for <span id=\"urn:enhancement-e15ebc69\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/people\">people<\/span> that are using the platforms that you&#8217;re creating. And that&#8217;s where the value comes from. So I&#8217;m a really big fan of putting <span id=\"urn:enhancement-a58237b9\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/customer\">customers<\/span> at the heart of everything that you do. So you can quantify and you can measure that in a variety of different ways. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"eplus-ezXxYU\">But I think the true value of what you&#8217;re delivering is a great <span id=\"urn:enhancement-8e470033\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/experience\">experience<\/span> for the <span id=\"urn:enhancement-87061035\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/people\">people<\/span> that are using the product that you&#8217;re creating. Everything your <span id=\"urn:enhancement-af47a2a4\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/company\">company<\/span> does, its ultimate success is is judged by the ability that you have to develop to deliver a product that <span id=\"urn:enhancement-82599de9\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/people\">people<\/span> want to use. So you have your different <span id=\"urn:enhancement-8b4a24ec\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/business\">business<\/span> outcomes that are linked to that&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"eplus-xHtD96\">However, Chris notes that your definition of value, &#8220;really depends on what state your business is at value means different things at different states, different <span style=\"user-select: auto;\" id=\"urn:enhancement-aafea068\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/company\">companies<\/span>, different markets. There&#8217;s a time where new feature developments important, there&#8217;s a time when <span style=\"user-select: auto;\" id=\"urn:local-annotation-252970\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/r_d_management\">R&amp;D<\/span> is important, it could be white labelling a platform.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"eplus-6oFd3p\">Renan shares:&nbsp; &#8220;I think it gets much more complicated with B2B because the selling process is very different. So with delivering value, you have to understand who is delivering value and to where in the chain. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"eplus-vLW06X\">Are you delivering value to the person who&#8217;s buying? Are you delivering value to the person who&#8217;s administrating? Are you delivering value to the <span style=\"user-select: auto;\" id=\"urn:enhancement-a49fb0f1\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/people\">people<\/span> that are actually using it? So I think the value is a little bit hard to define.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"eplus-Yl2fXW\">I often look at adoption, especially when you&#8217;re thinking about, was it worth it? Was this something that at the end of the day, <span id=\"urn:enhancement-5c8592ac\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/people\">people<\/span> use and <span id=\"urn:enhancement-59cf58c4\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/people\">people<\/span> talk about and <span id=\"urn:enhancement-47d9fe27\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/people\">people<\/span> refer to, because sometimes we deliver things just so to get that checklist off, but it&#8217;s not really a value add for <span id=\"urn:enhancement-e3f456d5\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/customer\">customers<\/span>.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"eplus-bizWWV\">Frank looks as value as defined by impact:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"eplus-zrAZOp\">&#8220;For a given <span style=\"user-select: auto;\" id=\"urn:enhancement-39b05650\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/goal\">goal<\/span> or <span style=\"user-select: auto;\" id=\"urn:enhancement-fc7ed36e\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/goal\">objective<\/span>, value is defined as when the <span style=\"user-select: auto;\" id=\"urn:enhancement-a5244eff\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/deliverable\">deliverable<\/span> actually provides an impact to the end consumer or the <span style=\"user-select: auto;\" id=\"urn:enhancement-fa27c9e1\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/end_user\">end-user<\/span>. And I think the key thing here is impact. You can build cool things, but if they don&#8217;t actually have an impact on the <span style=\"user-select: auto;\" id=\"urn:enhancement-182edaec\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/people\">people<\/span> you&#8217;re building it for, then you have not been delivered any value. The other thing then I get asked this question a lot by my <span style=\"user-select: auto;\" id=\"urn:enhancement-ec14fae7\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/team\">teams<\/span> is when is value delivered?&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"eplus-47MsVV\">In regard to the digital <span id=\"urn:enhancement-83fcaeca\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/customer\">customer<\/span> platform of the airline, he notes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"eplus-4D2wQT\">&#8220;You realise the value is not this unary thing that you deliver once, you could deliver in small chunks. But until that holiday is actually complete and they&#8217;re back home from I don&#8217;t think we have even have delivered any value. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"eplus-TAAVZv\"><span style=\"user-select: auto;\" id=\"urn:enhancement-306595d4\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/value_marketing\">Value<\/span> really depends on a number of things, it depends on who&#8217;s paying for it, who&#8217;s consuming, right, and you have to make sure that, you know, the consumer might be the person that gets the impact, but the adoption of the numbers might be the value to the person paying for it.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"eplus-hON80o wp-block-heading\">How to measure value?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"eplus-eMgf2h\">According to Frank, &#8220;A good technique that we use is value stream mapping, where you map uhe whole value stream to understand the different steps that happen for the actual value to get delivered to the <span style=\"user-select: auto;\" id=\"urn:enhancement-3e340253\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/customer\">customer<\/span>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"eplus-w92IAl\">We focus on reducing waste in the value stream and trying to shrink that cycle time or time from when that just an idea to when it&#8217;s actually in the hands of a <span style=\"user-select: auto;\" id=\"urn:enhancement-88ada365\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/customer\">customer<\/span>.&nbsp; Obviously, there&#8217;ll be <span style=\"user-select: auto;\" id=\"urn:enhancement-109ee7b9\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/performance_indicator\">KPIs<\/span> at the different steps, but have to be able to correlate them to actually measure whether the value has been delivered the way you want it or not.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"eplus-Yy8BBO\">Chris believes it is equally important to make sure your team is exposed to what is giving value to your <span style=\"user-select: auto;\" id=\"urn:enhancement-1b23f8b3\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/customer\">customers<\/span>: &#8220;We&#8217;ve used lots of different techniques around that from things like when someone&#8217;s onboarding, get them on intercom support for the first couple of weeks; they actually can talk directly to <span style=\"user-select: auto;\" id=\"urn:enhancement-cceb102c\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/customer\">customers<\/span> to understand where the pain points are to understand how <span style=\"user-select: auto;\" id=\"urn:enhancement-d7035f0a\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/people\">people<\/span> are using the platform. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"eplus-nrE8Vd\">I think building up that level of empathy is an essential thing. You can look at the <span style=\"user-select: auto;\" id=\"urn:enhancement-4570dece\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/data\">data<\/span>; you can look at the numbers, but exposing <span style=\"user-select: auto;\" id=\"urn:enhancement-8b47b73f\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/people\">people<\/span> to actual conversations with <span style=\"user-select: auto;\" id=\"urn:enhancement-f871717f\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/people\">people<\/span> using the platform. I think that&#8217;s hugely valuable.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"eplus-aQ470L\">Frank encourages teams to think about why they are doing certain tasks. He notes that with many <span id=\"urn:enhancement-ff362ed3\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/company\">companies<\/span> have a&nbsp; top-down approach meaning those that carry out that wor don&#8217;t usually know when they&#8217;re doing it. &#8220;And not knowing why means that that they&#8217;re probably missing the point.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"eplus-svOhah wp-block-heading\">What is your secret sauce for judging different priorities while achieving the best outcome?&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"eplus-o0Dgut\">Frank suggests prioritising by value and by risk:  &#8220;Let&#8217;s assume that we&#8217;re in an agile world. The focus, I believe, should be on how do you deliver the highest <span style=\"user-select: auto;\" id=\"urn:enhancement-46dbcd94\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/business\">business<\/span> value or <span style=\"user-select: auto;\" id=\"urn:enhancement-9d787971\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/return_on_investment\">ROI<\/span> generating items at the same time reducing risks such as technical debt.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"eplus-anjkns\"> It means that if at some point in the near future, you ran out of funds, you still delivered something of value and you produce as much risk as you can. That way you learn fast,  you fail fast, and you can recover quicker. So the subtle combination of <span style=\"user-select: auto;\" id=\"urn:enhancement-51361cea\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/business\">business<\/span> value and risk reduction is, for me, one of the best ways to prioritise the delivery of features or value to a <span style=\"user-select: auto;\" id=\"urn:enhancement-d62909d9\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/customer\">customer<\/span>.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"eplus-kjB0P8\">Renan suggests a kind of compartmentalization: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"eplus-JH23bv\">&#8220;I think one of the critical pieces that I&#8217;ve learned is that the way to look at this is to think very small pieces. Instead of saying, these are the top three things, if you start looking inside, you say oh, well on this first top thing actually only the first part is really critical and everything else, maybe we can move aside. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"eplus-Ff1sA9\">And once you start having those that level of conversation, you&#8217;re able to provide that compartmentalization in a much more detailed way and you&#8217;re able to advance. If you only had one person that could work on one thing, at one point in time, what would be the most important task you would give them out of all the tasks in the world?&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"eplus-CnqIeK\">Chris thinks there is no real secret just a continual evaluation:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"eplus-GOTpKe\">&nbsp;&#8220;You&#8217;ve got to be pragmatic at the given points in time that you&#8217;re at. It never ends. It continues constantly, you&#8217;re always going to be rejecting things. You&#8217;re always going to be re-evaluating things. If you&#8217;re setting your roadmap too far in the future.
