It&#8217;s not true. <span style=\"user-select: auto;\" id=\"urn:enhancement-4978c06b\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/internet_of_things\">IoT<\/span> is <span style=\"user-select: auto;\" id=\"urn:enhancement-9e7261c7\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/ubiquitous_computing\">ubiquitous<\/span>: from connected homes to wearable tech, Industrial <span style=\"user-select: auto;\" id=\"urn:enhancement-a7d05d4c\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/internet_of_things\">IoT<\/span> in manufacturing, agriculture and <span style=\"user-select: auto;\" id=\"urn:enhancement-69ba3c62\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/supply_chain\">supply chain<\/span>, to health tech, <span style=\"user-select: auto;\" id=\"urn:enhancement-6752a60f\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/smart_city\">smart cities<\/span>, mobility tech and location intelligence &#8211; the use cases of <span style=\"user-select: auto;\" id=\"urn:enhancement-90f719c5\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/internet_of_things\">IoT<\/span> have evolved and are continuing the expand at a rapid rate of exponential <span style=\"user-select: auto;\" id=\"urn:enhancement-777bb537\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/innovation\">innovation<\/span>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"eplus-pguf8F\"><span id=\"urn:enhancement-f91e48a8\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/innovation\">Innovation in product development such as the ability to create small, long-lasting batteries and chips at a massive scale and the reduced <a href=\"https:\/\/www.codemotion.com\/magazine\/uncategorized\/how-to-optimise-your-iot-devices-power-consumption\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">power consumption of today&#8217;s devices means IoT<\/a> is becoming possible at a grander scale than ever before.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"eplus-s0iVg7 wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-but-i-m-not-into-hardware\">But I&#8217;m not into hardware!<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"eplus-QPR80J\">Many people think of <span id=\"urn:enhancement-9735a4b1\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/computer_hardware\">hardware<\/span> engineering when they first think of roles in <span id=\"urn:enhancement-ce6f85da\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/internet_of_things\">IoT<\/span>, but there&#8217;s a vast number of tasks, <span id=\"urn:enhancement-e69e8552\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/technology\">technologies<\/span> and functions align themselves with <span id=\"urn:enhancement-b7ae1fc6\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/internet_of_things\">IoT<\/span>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"eplus-9dN63e wp-block-list\"><li>Devices need to be programmed to read the data from their connected sensors. Data needs to either partly or fully processed on the edge, and later sent to the server or cloud.<\/li><li>There&#8217;s programming on the server-side and cloud storage.<\/li><li>IoT platforms &#8211; the support software that connects edge hardware, access points, and data networks to other parts of the value chain and the end-user applications need to be created and maintained.<\/li><li>Web and mobile apps provide a means to control and communicate with connected devices.<\/li><li>UX is critical to ensure we can communicate with connected devices in the way they are intended.<\/li><li>Management and monitoring of IoT devices &#8211; think device monitoring, firmware and software updates, diagnostics, crash analysis and reporting and physical management.<\/li><li>The power of IoT harnessed through data analytics &#8211; a means to interpret and gain actionable benefits from the deluge of IoT data.<\/li><li>The creation of platforms and marketplaces to share and sell IoT data<\/li><li>IoT devices and their data need to be secured.<\/li><li>Significantly, the combinatorial innovation of IoT with a myriad of other technologies including AI, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.codemotion.com\/magazine\/dev-hub\/machine-learning-dev\/machine-learning-edge-example\/\">machine learning<\/a>, blockchain, and robotics means that gaining skills which align themselves with IoT leads to an abundance of career options across multiple sectors. The possibilities are limitless.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"eplus-VWIGk2 wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-does-it-take-to-work-in-iot\">What does it take to work in IoT?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"eplus-UammXH\">In terms of developer skills, the specific <span id=\"urn:enhancement-4bcd2f6e\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/programming_languages\">programming languages<\/span> in <span id=\"urn:enhancement-6ea41cdc\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/internet_of_things\">IoT<\/span> are vast and depend on what precisely you are working on. You also need:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"eplus-bwUrFH wp-block-list\"><li>A mindset that is genuinely interested in technology and innovation as platforms compete with each other and quickly become extinct and advancements in hardware like sensors and single board platforms and chips and CPUs mean the potential and capabilities of IoT are ever-changing.<\/li><li>To be something of a tech news junkie &#8211; what&#8217;s being made, what problems are companies trying to solve with the use of IoT, what issues are unsolved? Who&#8217;s succeeding and who&#8217;s failing? How can innovations in one sector benefit another vertical? How to combine technologies for new possibilities?&nbsp;<\/li><li>A willingness to look beyond what exists to what&#8217;s missing. Many of the most exciting companies are creating the technology that underpins the potential of IoT in the future.&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"eplus-eFzRKz wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-how-can-i-learn-about-iot-tinkering\">How can I learn about IoT? Tinkering! <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"eplus-bPky3v\">There&#8217;s a plethora of resources, <span id=\"urn:enhancement-89e8cb37\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/programming_tool\">tools<\/span>, and teachings available for anyone thinking of finding out more about <span id=\"urn:enhancement-8c216a6f\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/internet_of_things\">IoT<\/span>. Tinkering is perhaps the most enjoyable way to dip your toe in <span id=\"urn:enhancement-7a57b93a\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/internet_of_things\">IoT<\/span>. Even better, Adafruit is a 100% woman-owned manufacturing company.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"eplus-mU9wGI\"><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.raspberrypi.org\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Raspberry Pi<\/a>: A raspberry Pi is a very inexpensive, tiny <span id=\"urn:enhancement-d3ff3e6c\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/watson_computer\">computers<\/span>. They&#8217;re a great way to learn how to solder together simple circuits, and link those circuits with software. Start with simple demo projects then expand as your capabilities increase. The Raspberry Pi IDE comes with more than 35,000 packages and walkthroughs of rapid <span id=\"urn:enhancement-5fb1c814\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/installation_computer_programs\">installation<\/span> using pre-compiled software.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"eplus-asIrGM\"><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.arduino.cc\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Arduino:<\/a>&nbsp;Arduino is an open-source <span id=\"urn:enhancement-9240bb91\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/computer_hardware\">hardware<\/span> and software company, project and user community that designs and manufactures single-board <span id=\"urn:enhancement-a277e4f4\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/microcontroller\">microcontrollers<\/span> and microcontroller kits for building digital <span id=\"urn:enhancement-8350400\" class=\"textannotation disambiguated wl-thing\" itemid=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl01770\/entity\/information_appliance\">devices<\/span>. An Arduino board reads inputs &#8211; light on a sensor, a finger on a button, or a Twitter message &#8211; and turns it into an output &#8211; activating a motor, turning on an LED, publishing something online.
